Sanctum Demo Mixes Tower Defense and FPS

Now available on FileShack is the 323MB demo for Sanctum, a hybrid of first-person shooter and tower defense that was pointed out by the top chaps at Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

While players must construct a maze of towers, that alone won't stop the invading hordes of exotic creatures. Upgradeable firearms let you get right down in the fight, picking off survivors and exploiting weak spots yourself.

Developer Coffee Stain Studios plans to eventually create a "full version" of Sanctum, which began life as an Unreal Tournament 3 mod before switching to Epic's free, standalone edition of Unreal Engine 3--the Unreal Development Kit.

Coffee Stain is also developing a 2D tower defense based upon Sanctum for iPhone.

Well i'm happy and sad. I thought of this game so long ago. even with the UT3 engine in mind, but didnt have the know-how to make a game like this. I'm sure the one in my head is way better than this one. But atleaste somebody is doing it. so i'm very happy for them. hope it turns out fun to play.

this is actually not the first game to try this... iron grip: warlord sounds like the same kind of thing... never played it, so cant say much about it other than it seems similar in concept...

Also, Toy Soldiers on Xbox 360 let's you man towers and even jump into an airplane and attack troops from the air.

Was thinking the same thing. Toy Soldiers hit a nice balance between not overly powerful towers so you had to have some FPS skills to tip the battle.

"I'm sure the one in my head is way better than this one."

Why not try writing a great GDD and hand it to an already-assembled mod team?
