'Traditional' Final Fantasy 'The 4 Heroes of Light' Announced for DS

12
Final Fantasy developer Square Enix has announced a return to the RPG series' roots in the brand new Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, due out for DS on October 5.

"Designed with the concept of a traditional RPG brought up-to-date with the best of today's technology," Square Enix explains, "the game goes back to the basics and origins of the Final Fantasy series, with a classic story of four young heroes embarking on an unforgettable adventure; a tale of dragons, kings, princesses and witches."

The hero Brandt will meet up with another three chums on his quest to rescue a princess from a witch, who together "will experience a journey full of joyous meetings and sad partings." Players can join their own friends over local wireless for multiplayer dungeon crawls, collecting Battle Points to exchange for "rare items" in singleplayer.

A 'Crown System' will allow players to switch between the twenty classes--including "the traditional Black Mage, White Mage, Ranger and many more"--by swapping headwear.

Developed by the studio behind the DS versions of Final Fantasy III and FFIV, Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light arrives exclusively for DS on October 5 in North America. The European release is scheduled for the vague fall period.

IMO the DSi is the sweet spot for portability, but if you're gonna be primarily playing at home, check out the DSi XL, that screen is HUGE.

Sure, but with the 3DS on the horizon and probably released later this year, I'm thinking I'd wait. I mean, the game isn't even out until October.

Probably not released year, only announced. If they shipped in Nov it would mean they'd already have to be in production now, or in the next month or two. If that was the case you'd think some fab plant employee would have spilled the beans by now -- as usually happens. I'd say launch next year, but may not wait for Nov. Nintendo has already said they view Apple as the next competitor, so they may be more concerned with the launch of the next iPad vs anything MS or Sony are doing.

All the trades suggest this year, and announcements by component manufacturers like Sharp seem to support that.

If you're looking at it for the big screen, the 3DS probably won't be as big.
