DJ Hero Declared 2009's Highest-Grossing New IP
FreeStyleGames' rhythm game grossed more than any other new property in Europe and North America, according to data from research firm The NPD Group. The fastest-selling new IP of 2009 was Gearbox's shooter RPG Borderlands, publisher Take Two has declared, having sold "over 2 million units worldwide" in only seven weeks.
"DJ Hero has transformed music gaming by marrying an innovative turntable controller and exhilarating gameplay with the biggest artists and incredible music from around the world," boasted Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick in a press statement. "Consumers and critics agree that DJ Hero is one of the best music games ever created and further establishes Guitar Hero as the premier franchise of its kind."
Elsewhere however, Kotick has conceded that "if you're going to make a commitment to doing something original, the odds are that you're not going to get it right on the first chance," saying Activision will "stick with" the DJ Hero franchise and "get it right."
