Board Game 'Risk' Revamp Coming to XBLA
Risk: Factions updates the global domination game with online play as well as, EA Play says, "outlandish factions, a unique art style, new gameplay twists and off-beat humor."
Objective-based and world conquest modes will feature, with dynamic terrain, five different factions and unlockable avatar rewards. "Head-to-head... unique, animated combat missions" will also bring exciting-sounding "Overkill" moments based on dice rolls.
"For the past half-century, millions of RISKfans have been consumed with ruling the world... we're now going to bring that masterpiece experience to life and add other amazing layers of XBLA-style gameplay that will take conquests to a new level," said Chip Lange, general manager of EA's Hasbro Division in a press statement.
Risk: Factions is slated for release on Xbox Live Arcade "in early 2010."

Needs a classic mode. :(

Speculation, but:
There was a great set of articles on WotC's website on how Stainless Games built the MtG game for XBLA, including how it used good programming design and parts of its AI. They claimed in that article that while their target was the version of MTG we have today, they built enough flexibility in it to add many more cards or even a different game engine; the AI itself is mostly deterministic cycling through millions of possibilities to find the best result.
What this has to do with Risk? I can easily see Stainless taking the same approach (reusing their AI threading code and other aspects) to have both the Factions version of Risk described and a classic mode without all the frills in the same package. They are not slackers on the coding and also seem very dedicated to replicating the physical play. -
