Evening Reading: This Tastes Spoiled. Try It.

In a time honored tradition people around the world will spend the next few days snooping around for the secret present stash. Those who find their quarry never hold back, diving right in to see ahead of time what their Christmas Day holds in store.

Curiosity lures gamers to do the same all year round but finding the answers they seek is not always met with jubilation. In the video game world we call these revelations spoilers. Unlike finding your presents, though, it doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing. There's plenty written about books, movies, and TV shows without compromising their narrative integrity.

The trick comes down to the people writing the content doing a better job of respecting the material. It requires keeping in mind what people will want to know versus what they would want kept quiet. Games also present a unique situation because a significant part of the experience comes from playing them. That's not something really prone to spoiling while at the same time great to know as an observer because hey, if you don't like Japanese RPG's for instance, who cares how great Final Fantasy 13 is?

Take the recent Mass Effect 2 previews for example. At the time Chris was here visiting and that worked out great because I talked out what was cool about the demos with him. It's a process I usually just go through in my head. The final check is to read the finished story from the audience's perspective to be confident that yes, I'd be good with this. Have I screwed up before? Absolutely. It's definitely tough to find that line. As the media covering games improves, though, we should reach a point where you can be excited about a game, follow it in the news, and not have to worry about your game being spoiled.

Now Christmas, that's a whole other matter. If you find the presents you're on your own.

Before hitting the news we've got a little present for 50 PS3 owners. The first 50 to hit this link will get a code for the Battlefield Bad Company Beta! Keep in mind it's PS3 only and yes, we're working on PC for when it drops. In the meantime, here's today's news:

And last, but not least, words really cannot do justice to this video of Jessica Simpson using an earwax candle she got as a Christmas gift while her hairdresser who gave it to her sings carols

L4D2 is sheer chaos from start to finish, with the safe rooms being the only respite.

Maybe all the Avatar reviews/gripes/praises/arguments/philosophies will go away and be replaced by sweet, cheap game links =]

^^^ such an awesome game. I've been playing it over the last 4-5 weeks and not getting my ass kicked for the first time.

The USA and Japan bailed on me but fuck those guys. I'll fund my own operatives!

i love this game, but suck so bad at it. i usually end up not having enough guys, or bases. especially when they start attacking the bases.

also: it still stings, magicwishmonkey, it still stings.

I suck at it too, and I had to play through like 5 games before I finally started to understand how to avoid getting my ass handed to me.

Once you get the hang of it it's not that bad, the game is incredibly detailed for something released >15 years ago.
