Evening Reading: Boxed In

This Evening Reading is a compromise. This afternoon I received a press release from Square Enix touting the box art you see here for Final Fantasy 13. Doing story posts for screenshots already gets me wondering whether we're covering a game or outright promoting it but box art? That's clearly just marketing the game, right? As I thought about it some more I also accepted that whatever category it fell under as a fan I'd want to see it -- and that makes it something we should post.

And screens? Well I know I always want to see them too on any game I'm interested in. At 1UP we had modules to throw this sort of thing up on the site but that gets lost too easily and really the fun of screens is in commenting and speculating on what you see there. As we work on improving Shack one of the goals will be to find a presentation method that doesn't treat these things as "news" but does give us a place to talk about the latest.

In the meantime you have plenty to check out from today's feed:

Pick up pipe, kill crazy hobo, use black light on suspicious chemicals, kill scary clowns, the end.

      Great game.

You're going after a deadly gang of hobos. At the end, you come across the head hobo. You kill him but not before becoming a hobo yourself.

You start out in part 2 as a hobo. The plot is basically the same, but you come across several filmings of Bum Fights. You are also hopelessly addicted to liquor.

That's all I got out of the whole thing.

Yea, Condemned 1 is totally incoherent, as far as I'm concerned.

I never got the second game, is it better than the first? I'm sure I could find a copy somewhere.

As I understood it (what little plot there was, beside hobo-beating), some dude was using hypersonic noise to induce craziness in the hobo population. This is also why you keep finding the dead birds. There's some hints here and there that the protagonist is also caught up in the crazy, and at least some of the things he experiences may be hallucinations.

But really, it's about grabbing a rusty pipe and beating hobo faces in with it.

what i don't get is what is with the demonic beings with disfigured faces and super strength, and teleportation abilities, etc? mostly on the last couple of levels. it's never explained. hobos going nuts i can understand but not the more supernatural creatures.

but he clearly is taking damage and the old man tells him "kill the evil", ie the one who caused all this

              hallucinations

You see monsters, I see some nutjob beating himself in the head with a lead pipe.

It's all a matter of the volume of anti-psychotics.

I've never looked into these games, but the few comments I see have me interested. Is the story a major bullet point, or can one generally dismiss it and just enjoy the gameplay?

it's a good game. i loved the combat by the end. also good and creepy. the story starts out semi-compelling and then disintegrates but the levels are well-crafted.

it's also pretty dated-looking, even four years later. blocky cutscene models and some antiquated textures. but it's not painful.

The story is messy, but it works extremely well on an atmospheric level. Which I think is what it aims for.

What Condemned (particularly part 2) really nailed was how crazy/angry an enemy felt toward you. Like they seem to get pissed off when you come nearby and they just basically go from a harmless sitting down position into a full psycho yelling rage. The subtle touches of yelling/swearing while they come at you, or while they beckon you from behind a fence and freak out trying to find a way to get to you. AI nowadays just turns a corner and either points in your direction and shoots or comes at you. No real 'emotion' involved.

i enjoyed late in the game where you could use desk tops, shovels, and planks. they felt nice and brutal compared to your basic pipes.
