The Xbox 360 port of Infinity Ward's 2003 shooter Call of Duty will be released as an Xbox Live Arcade download this week, enabling those that didn't pick up CoD: Modern Warfare 2's Hardened or Prestige Editions to experience the franchise's first WWII outing.

European Xbox community manager Graeme Boyd made the reveal via Twitter, specifying that the game will go for 1200 MS Points ($15) when it hits Wednesday.

No word yet as to when the public PlayStation 3 / PlayStation Network release for Call of Duty Classic will arrive. As on Xbox 360, the Hardened and Prestige editions of CoD: Modern Warfare 2 PS3 contained download codes for the classic shooter.

[Update] Activision has announced that Call of Duty Classic will be downloadable on PlayStation 3 come Thursday, December 3, at $14.99. [/Update]

In related news, publisher Activision claims the Call of Duty franchise "has surpassed $3 billion in retail sales worldwide" and "has sold in excess of 55 million units worldwide," with the latest entry, Modern Warfare 2, having pulled in $550 million across five days and been billed as "the biggest launch in history across all forms of entertainment."

I like CoD better than MoH:AA for the shooting mechanics alone. MoH never seemed to grow out of the stuffy quake feel.

MOH:AA was fantastic and is what got me into WWII shooters. I never played COD 1 or 2, these screens look really good even today. I wonder if MP is included. Maybe I'll check these out.

What I find ironic is that Infinity Ward has become the very thing they left EA to get away from.
I still find it hard to believe that MW1 and 2 don't have drivable vehicles in multiplayer.
Having said that, COD2's PC multiplayer totally kicks ass.

Yeah it's sad isn't it. Honestly, I loved IW until this whole fiasco with the dedicated servers and mod tools getting killed. What's sadder is that with each release of news and info they keep trying to see how low they can go with the PC community. It's like they forgot their most loyal fans. We've been the ones with them since the beginning and also their biggest promoters. It really saddens me that I have to say goodbye to them.

asking for drivable vehicles in MW multiplayer is like asking for drivable vehicles in Quake, if you want that kind of gameplay, play the Battlefield series

I liked them both about the same, although in some ways CoD was better. The high points were higher, even if over all MoH was a better game.

      Agreed on both counts.
