Gamer Gifts: Jeff's Suggestions

5
Once again, it's the time of year when friends and families gather together to consume metric tons of home-cooked comestibles. It's also time that many of us begin the oft-dreaded prospect of brainstorming holiday gift ideas.

Shopping for fellow video-gamers can sometimes be tricky, largely due variance in individual taste. To that end, I've come up with a few gift suggestions--one practical, one fun, and one that's way over the top--to help get your own ideas cooking.

AK Rock Box Gaming and Storage Ottoman with Drum Lift
$178.65

Are you a fan of Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but hate figuring out storage solutions for piles of plastic instruments? The 'AK Rock Box Gaming and Storage Ottoman with Drum Lift,' is a faux-roadie's dream, and one of the more elegant storage solutions out there. This bad boy can hold two guitars, drums, a foot pedal and a microphone, and even have some room left-over. The drum heads attach to a metal "lift" that extends from the ottoman, effectively transforming it into a drum stand.

Assassin's Creed II
$60

By now, it's likely you've heard some of the positive buzz surrounding Ubisoft's recently-released Renaissance revenge romp. Not only is the game outselling its predecessor by a significant margin, to the surprise of many, it also seems like it could be serious contender for game of the year. It's got its hooks in me to be sure.

After playing over a dozen hours, I'm happy to report that the sequel is noticeably improved. Every mission (so far) has been relevant to the main story, their variety has increased tremendously, and even the optional collectibles incentivize beyond mere achievement points or trophies. The main revenge-driven storyline also makes the protagonist Ezio much more sympathetic.

In short, don't let your experience with the first game serve as an excuse to avoid the sequel. Assassin's Creed 2 may just be that epic single-player action experience you've been looking for.

Arkeg Game Cabinet
$3,999, currently on sale for $3,499

It's not the first time someone thought to combine video games and brewskis, but the Arkeg is one of the best solutions out there. For the paltry sum of $4,000, the Arkeg is part full-sized retro gaming cabinet, part Moe's Tavern.

According to the official product description, Arkeg comes complete with "...69 pre-loaded games," can "...play any video or audio file, and has the ability to play any video game in their computer-archived form (roms)." It's worth mentioning that Arkeg "...only includes games that it has the legal right to distribute." The cabinet also sports two six-button layouts with "Happ Competition joysticks," a 3" trackball, a 24" LCD HD display, and slide-out slim keyboard, among other features.

Arkeg's real kicker is the "5-gallon Cornelius [beer] keg" inside the cabinet that lets you pour yourself a frosty glass of suds via an "effortless CO2 draft system," that also has digital temperature controls. The official site also includes a delicious partial list of compatible beverages with which to wet your whistle. Arkeg simultaneously redefines the 'sport' of 'Beer Pong,' and seems like a most impressive marriage between alcohol and gaming.
