Here's an idea Harmonix. Release songs that people actually know.

The Damned were a great punk band. Smash it up is one of their more mainstream songs but it's still great. If you're at all interested in punk check out Machine Gun Etiquette, particularly the track Love Song, which has a great opening bass line. Also, you can't go wrong with a band member named Captain Sensible.

You're right, why would people know recent releases, such as "The Pretender" and "Best of You" by Foo Fighters. That 10 pack of Queen songs that came out a couple of weeks ago? Too many unknown songs like "Under Pressure" and "Fat Bottomed Girls". I hate it when they do that.
This week, yes, "Icky Thump" is likely the only well-known song of the bunch. However, Harmonix uses Rock Band as a platform not only to expose people to well known songs, but also lesser known songs as well.
The Wolfmother pack sold me on their new album, "Cosmic Egg", after being highly skeptical of the new lineup. Think of Rock Band as a gateway into music as a whole, not just what's 'popular'. That's what the FM Radio is for, these days.
