Marking the fifth demo to arrive in the Xbox Live Marketplace this week, a 839MB sample of TimeGate's sci-fi FPS Section 8 is now available for Xbox Live Gold members.

The full game is expected to hit retailers in PC and Xbox 360 form come September 1. Should the demo stick with the traditional one week of Xbox Live Gold exclusivity, those with free Xbox Live Silver accounts will be able to download it next Fiday, August 28.

I played the beta a bit on PC the other day. I'm not sure how well that would translate from mouse/kb to the comparatively sluggish responsiveness of an analog thumbstick.

I keep meaning to give it another try. It was a little too scattered and chaotic, without much of a defined "front" happening. Sort of like the early beta of Planetside before they changed the tower control mechanic.

In regards to Planetside, do you mean before the addition of the lattice system to prevent hacking of bases not connected to a base or region your faction controlled? Those were indeed chaotic days, but many lamented the loss of the ability for small squads to make a substantial difference in the fight for a continent and felt it only added to zerg style of gameplay that evolved.

I was too busy driving around in my tank columns to notice any chaos. rolling in and cleaning house is some of my favorite memories playing games.

Yeah, that's the system I meant. In some sense, yes, they lost a lot of flexibility/surprise attacks/small-scale skirmish aspects.

On the other hand, it was (for me anyway) almost impossible to find a decent fight to get into because everyone was everywhere and there wasn't any sense of where the combat was happening. There were markers showing where something happened a short time ago but by the time you loaded up and got ready to drop in, it was pretty much over.

It's possible there was room for a third solution, something like being able to establish a control zone (over several minutes, maybe by hacking several smaller points within the base itself) and then start hacking a base behind the front line. That might be workable.
