PS3 Price Drop, Slim Model Listed by Retailer
With Sony's GamesCom press conference less than an hour away, it appears that Kmart has jumped the gun on the expected announcement of a PlayStation 3 price drop and the so-heavily-rumored-that-it-is-all-but-confirmed PS3 Slim model.
Kmart lists the PS3 Slim at $299, with the retailer further specifying that the new model will pack a 120GB hard drive and will be available next Monday, August 24. It all sounds quite likely, minus the sudden release date, but we're bound to hear more soon.
At present, the cheapest version of the PlayStation 3 hardware sells for $399 and comes packed with an 80GB hard disc drive. Expect more details very, very shortly.

Well unless they completely drop the only other PS3 SKU in production (80gig), they are going to have to gimp this in some way so that the more expensive console is worth the money. Backwards compatibility is already gone, as is the media card reader and SACD support, and it's already down to 2 USB ports.
Now consider the fact that the Slim PS3 has added features in that it is, well, slim, and has a 120 gig hard drive. A size reduction is something people usually pay MORE money for, especially when the other features stay the same or improve (like the ds lite or ds-i).
I really don't think Sony wants people to buy this console. They just need to have something cheap out on the market, so something has to go on the slim model to make $399 SKU seem like a good deal. -

Not only is the blu-ray playback rated in the top 3, but the DVD upconverting is amazing as well. I can tell you from 2+ years, it really makes everything look amazing! Now I also have a 52" 1080p full HDTV, so I can really see any imperfection. I love the upconverting, but that's mainly used by the wife and kids. I strictly rent/buy Blu-rays now.
And when I say upconverting, I mean the PS3 plays a normal DVD @ 480 standard resolution and upconverts it to you output setting (720p, 1080i or 1080p). All HDDVD & Blu-ray players do it, but none do it as well from what I've personally seen. -
