The Sims 3 Sales Set Record for EA

18
Electronic Arts has made its expected declaration of Sims domination following last week's release of The Sims 3. The company claims the PC/Mac game sold more than 1.4 million units at launch, making it EA's biggest launch on the PC to date.

EA also noted that over 7 million pieces of player-created content have been downloaded already. That's a lot of wallpaper.

I still don't 'get' this game line. It seems like an advanced ant farm that you just end up getting them all dead in the end.

You can reduce any game genre down to a ridiculously basic repetition of a particular interaction or limited set of interactions, and make it sound banal. Obviously the thing that people like about this particular series is the emergent dynamics and mechanics that come out of its interpersonal interactions; or they like the general "god-game" style of play that is present in numerous other PC-oriented genres; or they like the focus on nonviolent interactions and general lightheartedness; or they like the opposite, the potential for player-driven sadism. It's not that hard to imagine what somebody might like about it, even if you don't.

CoD4 is the exact same thing except that the ant farm is tilted so the ants fall toward you and all the ants are red ants but in the end they all die anyway.

The sad thing is that you end up taking better care of your sims than you do of yourself... :P

I actually enjoy this game with my wife. I ended up creating us as our characters with the traits that we have and we ended up with the similar nuances as we do in real life. It's actually pretty fun with the Town Editor cause I can actually create relationships around me and see how they interact virtually.. yeah it's an advanced form of ant farm watching.. but you don't exactly get to tackle or influence the the ants every move and see the pay offs as big green diamonds that glow..

The Sims 3 is, quite simply, a strategy game with a close-to-life, real world setting.
