Nintendo DSi Smashes DS Lite's First Week Sales

7
Nintendo has revealed that the Nintendo DSi posted far higher sales during its first week of sale than its predecessor the DS Lite managed when it launched in 2006.

According to Nintendo's internal tracking numbers, a whopping 435,000 DSi units were sold in the first week of sale in the United States. In contrast, the DS Lite sold 226,300.

The third iteration of the Nintendo DS, the DSi slims the console, enlarges the screens and adds two cameras, at the price of removing its Game Boy Advance cartridge slot.

According to NPD data, Nintendo accounted for 58.4% of all hardware sales in March.

Really? Who's buying a DS for $40 too much? Makes no sense.

People that want a bigger screen, better sound, 4x the ram, 2x the cpu speed, and an online store?

Interesting. Where did you get the hardware specs? Wonder what the significance of the processor memory increase is. Will there be DSi games that don't run on the Lite? That'd be lame. But somehow not surprising.

it'd be pretty surprising for a developer to give up the enormous DS install base just for slightly better graphics (which DS owners obviously don't care about)

People who never bought a DS Lite?

I have a DSi and it's absolutely fantastic. I didn't own a DS Lite but I did have a DS Chunk and this is a huge improvement. Given the choice between a Lite and paying $40 extra for the DSi, it's hard to pass up the improvements and potential future uses of the hardware specs and camera.

I owned a lite, bought the DSi for the cameras and the shop, I haven't been disappointed, I bought Brain Age Math for $8 (which I've always enjoyed), and Mixed Messages for $5 (which I pass around work for hilarious results), all the while still able to keep Rhythm Heaven in the cartridge slot for anytime gaming, plus, while slow and limited, I've been using the web browser from bed, for late night (mobile) facebook fun while the woman watches her shows...

I only returned mine because I bought a laptop first and I already have a DSLite, but I still want to get one around summertime.

I have a standard DS, and am seriously considering upgrading to the new DSi. If I used handhelds more I would already have one, but this is seriously making me reconsider.

New DS owner here. I just recently bought a DS lite instead of waiting for the DSi because it didn't seem worth the extra couple bucks.
