Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV (PC, PS3, 360) has sold nearly 13 million copies as of January 31, according to publisher Take-Two.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise made up nearly 40% of Take-Two's sales in its first quarter, which saw total sales revenue of $256 million on a $50 million loss. Take-Two reiterated its plans to release the next Xbox 360-exclusive GTA IV DLC pack before October 31 of this year.

In 2005 Warren Spector commented on how he thought Rockstar could do so much more and groundbreaking things with the open world stuff in GTA. I'm inclined to agree. Not that GTA is bad but, the possibilities...

Groundbreaking could easily mean low sales. Take it from Spector himself who made Deus Ex. One of my fav games of all time which didn't sell as well as it should have.

Rockstart obviously found its niche in 'controversial' titles. It serves their pocket book well. Why change the formula?

Of course I don't expect something like DE from Rockstart ever so it's easy for me to surmise they will stick to the type of games they have been making.

They don't really have to change the formula. It could stay as GTA, but it'd be interesting if they focused on deeper simulation of a smaller area. All those buildings are just boxes, with a sphere of randomly spawning pedestrians and cars surrounding the player character.

I bet there will be. But slowly. I mean if we could have walked into a hospital killing people in the 1999s, there would have been a much bigger controversial considering that GTA2 even had a mature rating (Not sure about US) and caused debates about its controversy.

They added more detail, and it hopefully will be more alive in the future.

I think they kind of tried that with Bully.

I unfortunately didn't care much for it.

Yes, Bully was their experiment and it failed in comparison to the original formula of mob, thugs, etc.

Bully failed because nobody wants to have a schedule they have to follow in a video game.
