I recently got TF2 when I got the orange box for Christmas. I tried playing it and I'm obviously too late because I died every spawn. What should a new person to this game do first? I'm reinstalling it now.

Well one thing you can do just to get used to the map layouts. Is to start up your own server and run around the various maps. Get to know them and you can them jump in some games with some shakers on their TF2 servers.

Play with Shackers. When you die, you don't feel so bad. Plus, a lot of them suck.

Eh, you die a lot in this game. :-) Just keep playing, you'll get the hang of it.

If you're not sure where to start, play soldier, medic, or engineer. Those classes are a little easier to start on. Engineer once you have your stuff up, you gun will kill people for you. Medic just try to keep people alive. Soldier is a good all around class, just keep an eye on your health because you take a lot of splash damage.

And don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't get some of the lingo! There will probably be a free weekend after the scout update comes out, so the servers will be flooded with new people. Just join up and blend in! lol

Don't always suggest medic to newbies, that gets people unexperienced medics, and that's really annoying.

Being a great medic is not easy.

^ This. Especially since some people really depend on them being good support for infiltration or tight defended areas.

Did you just suggest that he not play medic and suck until he can play medic and be good?

I think he's suggesting that Medic isn't as easy as some make it out to be. He takes as much skill as some of the other support classes. He's vital and people can get annoyed if they're given a crappy medic. Just be careful where you jump in and what you do. It'll save people from trying to kick you or call you horrible names :P

What makes you think that skills learned from playing medic will translate to playing other classes better than simply picking those skills up on the job? If he wants to play a support role then medic it is, but if making the other guy blow up is his calling then why not start there? I guarantee that playing medic will not improve soldier or demo skill beyond the common things like dodging and map knowledge.

The thing is, if you play another class first, you get to know the game first.

You can see how other people play, and how the maps work. You learn where people build sentries, and how they work, you learn how and where people rocket jump, you learn where stickies are likely to be hiding, etc.

While this is true, the advantage to playing medic, is that for the most part, as long as you're not stupid, other people will look out for your bacon so to speak. Or at least they will if they're halfway decent players. :-) And you usually can't screw up being invincible for 10 seconds too bad as long as you know how to stay near the guy you're übering.

That being said, a experienced medic can really help a team significantly, when a new or poor medic can be about as useless as a bad sniper. Just for the record, I have over 80 hours as medic which is my second most played class, and I am quite an excellent medic if I do say so myself.

I'd suggest you to pick soldier or demoman. Both the easiest classes to start with, but hard to master, especially the demoman. You'll get lots of kills with both as a starter. Most importantly, don't rush into people, try to keep a range at start and you'll be fine.

As with every game, you'll get used to playing :), there's no "being late" to the party :).

Demo can stack kills by spamming the grenades from a spot where he can't be harmed - what 90% of the demo population does. Works quite well to be honest.

Pyro is also easy yeah, you just get close to the enemy, what is not something you want to do if you die instantly :P

expect to die a lot. it's part of the game. if you want to get a few kills in first, play defensively, and casually team up with players and be their wingman to get assists (and to use them as a human shield).
