Second Mass Effect DLC Pack Detailed by BioWare; Saved Games to Carry Over to Sequel
"We had something in Mass Effect 1 which we didn't have the time and we didn't think we would do well enough, which is a fight club arena," said principal lead designer Preston Watamaniuk in the video.
"We wanted to be able to give people a much more combat-oriented, lighter-story kind of experience," said project director Casey Hudson. "You're going to go to kind of a casino, gaming, fight club space station."
The developers also dropped a few details on the anticipated Mass Effect sequel.
"Any save game that you make from Mass Effect 1, you should be able to carry that same character into Mass Effect 2," noted Hudson.
Said Hudson of the anticipated sequel: "In the second game, you're actually going to go through a darker period where you're really looking for answers... there are a lot of twists and turns, and it's generally a much darker experience."

Sweet. Keep bringing on the content. I love the Mass Effect universe.

It certainly will be interesting to see how they continue on the trilogy, especially after reading the two novels as well. I'm just going to guess right now the second game will deal with Gillian's further tapping into her biotic capabilities, with Cerberus chasing after her. And then later on dealing with the Migrant Fleet's attempts to control the Geth through the Reapers, as Saran did.

This is an older article and might not still be the case, but Bioware hints at how choices you made in the first game would affect things in the sequel. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080325.wgtmasseffect0325/BNStory/PersonalTech/home
I doubt armor, weapons, levels or many skills would carry over, unless they have ways around you not breaking the game from being unstoppable at the start. Perhaps new characters are brought up to a higher level to match that? I could see stuff like your paragon or renegade alignment continuing though. -

I feel like when you've been able to carry a character over before, instead of getting his entire skillset you get a bonus amount of experience or something. They can't have you start at much of a higher level than a new character or the game would be too easy, and the first game was already too easy.

Yep, they were both pretty decent. I read the first Mass Effect novel a good five months before the game actually launched I was so excited for it, heh. The second one does indeed set up the second game. I mentioned about it will probably deal with Cerberus and Grayson's eventual clash (would not be surprised to see Grayson become a main party character in the second game), Gillian's further development of her super-biotic capabilities, and the Migrant Fleet's search for the Reaper Fleet in order to control the Geth much like Saran did through Sovereign.
