Evening Reading

So tonight I am actually going to play that Dawn of War 2 beta. I can sense it.

As for the the videogame news around these parts:

Lastly, I suppose I should finish watching the last season of Lost?

Demigod's half finished in this state, anyhow. It's a true beta. This Dawn of War II MP beta is more like a demo.

I guess I'm kinda just pissed that I paid full retail price to get into a beta that is at such an early stage. I mean for fucks sake I can't even connect to a lobby for an internet game more than 10% of the time.

No building, no massive squads, voice acting sucks.

Voice acting sucks? Who did you play as? Seeing as the Space Marines are missing some unit dialogue, Ork lines are great as always, and the Tyranids don't have voices... I haven't played Eldar, but I'd assume it'd be very similar to the first game.

I didn't suck per say, but the storyline and poor use of an ugly in-engine cinematic system was the biggest detractor - thankfully they fixed this in CoH, but who knows what they are using for DoW2

Played two games so far, both as nids, and keep in mind that I've been playing CoH fairly competitively for the last 2 years or so.

Nids are very spammy and kind of boring.
The maps seem smaller, but yet everything moves as a much slower pace.
Also, the voices for the nids seemed very awkward - I was hoping for something nid'ish - instead I have some female commander voice just chirping on and on.

Also, it seems that they haven't put in some critical gameplay items like hitting spacebar for every critical event happening in game - IE i'm being warned that my team mates are attacked (in coh and damn near every other RTS - spacebar takes you to the event). There also seems to be some issues selecting multiple units and issuing commands either individually or as a group. IE I select a group of units and normally I can click on one of the units in the group of units and give it direct commands free of the other units - nope not happening - the entire selection of units take the command. Those were the two biggest gameplay items that I noticed immediately off the bat.

Overall the game is fairly pretty, but everything is so very alien to look at. For example in CoH a building or wall or fence is readily identified and understood as to what it should be. In DoW2 mousing over terrain will give you indicators for the type of cover it will provide your units, but it's mostly just craters and fairly unrecognizable shrubbery. Buildings that you can occupy are strategically located, but are few and far between.

Bottom line CoH had perfected urban and open warfare combat for the RTS genre - DoW2 feels a bit too arcadey (but not nearly as awful as WiC).

I agree with many of your criticisms, but at the same time, I feel that DoW II is MUCH more responsive. My units will do what I want them to in DoW II, vs. CoH, where it feels like my units are being dumb as fuck.

            January 22, 2009 2:33 AM

Ditto. Sometimes CoH gets on my nerves because the units seem to be unresponsive or take long times to do what I want. I know it's WW2, but I think DoW2 is the perfect blend of CoH and the classic DoW.

I just don't get it, I've played several recent RTS games over the last 5 years or so and it just seems like the EXACT same thing. Maybe i should stop playing them, I don't hate them but i always get a little excited about the new "sexy" RTS game then i play it and come away feeling completely underwhelmed. Ya sure the game is polished, the new units are cool, and the graphics are great, but it still seems like the same game just with fancy new wrapping paper, and yes i realize this might be a "beat a dead horse" argument but i just feel bleh about this game. No offense to anyone that likes it or the people that made it, but i think i just need to stop getting excited about these games ....... damn you starcraft 2.

No base building, RPG-like elements, (relatively) new mechanics like the cover system, and this seems like every RTS in the last 5 years?

      • reply
        January 22, 2009 1:22 AM

Without even commenting on the quality of the game, I completely disagree. This game has no base building, it has the cover system that's still pretty uncommon in RTS games, as well as the control-point-based system that's a whole lot newer than, say, the StarCraft type.

I just don't understand how you can say this is like all other RTS games, even if you don't like it. I mean, when I loaded it up, I was struck by how incredibly different it is.

        • reply
          January 22, 2009 1:48 AM

I guess i just see base building as further drawing out the tech trees, this game gives you one building that you upgrade and gives you all the units with the 3 tiers. basically consolidating all those "base buildings" you make in other rts, and the cover system while new, minus CoH, doesn't seem to make that big of a difference. With the control point system i guess i have been spoiled by the fps multiplayer games that have the same concept, but like i said maybe i'm finally discovering that i'm just not a true rts fan :(

IAWTP I beat a guy earlier purely BECAUSE of cover, we were pretty evenly matchd but when ever a fight broke out I made sure I was in cover and when he cottoned on and doing it himself I started to use flanking maneuvers on him. One of the things I love about this and CoH is that you can use real infantry tactics and it makes a difference.

Relic is my favourite RTS developer.

They seem to be innovating in EVERY which way.

As much as I like Starcraft, I fear Starcraft II might be a little tired.

Granted, I'm betting that the polish and story will be worth it.

Wait that sounds more like Company of Heroes which is what I had hoped for but had thought they didn't go with. So there cover system/lack of base building/control point gameplay is still intact from COH but it's all futuristic etc?

You must move from cover to cover (preferably to the "green" ones), otherwise your units will be butchered when in open field. It was very important in CoH, but it seems to be even more on DoW2.

The Live login takes forever to load then it takes minutes for anything I type to show up and even then it doesn't show up correctly. menu buttons take 5-10 seconds to light up after mousiong over them. A couple of style choices I noticed. Why isn't the mekboy player commander the BigMek instead? Like in DoW? I think it would fit better. Same with the eldar warlock, it should be another aspect leader, like a striking scorpion exarch or howling banshee exarch. Same play style but we would get to see another eldar aspect. And no Dark Reapers = me sad :(
