Sonic Goes Medieval, Gets a Sword in Latest Effort

Sega today announced Sonic and the Black Knight, a Wii-exclusive action title that throws the iconic blue speedster into medieval times and arms him with a sword.

Slated to arrive in spring 2009, the Sonic Team-developed effort is said to mark the second release in the Sonic Storybook Series, which began with the Wii-exclusive Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Whereas Sonic and the Secret Rings was based off the tales of Arabian Nights, the Black Knight is inspired by the fabled adventures of King Arthur. A Sonic game due out this fall, Sonic Unleashed, turns the mascot into a stretchy grey werewolf at points.

"Following Sonic on his way to knighthood will excite players of all ages," claimed Sega Europe marketing director Gary Knight.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

From this day forward I'm going to fucking pretend Sonic fell off the island in Sonic 3 and died. I want to believe Sega cannot be this fucking stupid. I want to, but I just can't.

Yeah, I agree. He fell of the Island and landed in Sonic Adventure.. Then we'll just say he died at the end of the game. Cool?

What about Sonic and Knuckles? That game was awesome! :(

As for Sega, well, I'm assuming they're trying new things for the younger players, not us oldies that grew up with the Genesis.

Don't you mean Yuki Naja left and their new project leader or whoever is absolutely batshit insane and out of touch with reality?
It's nothing to do with a perceived pandering to the "younger set", since Sonic Adventure 1/2, Sonic Heroes, and some of the others were decent games or not that terrible, prior to Naja's departure from Sonic Team. Besides, Sonic was always for kids...
