Morning Discussion

Yesterday was certainly rather the not quite first day for E3. If you would like the informational overview, here's all the hard info, while the staff give their thoughts on the day here. Here we've written up a preview of today's events.

A cavalcade of trailers have popped up, which all can be leisurely grazed at ShackVideo but here are some of the E3 highlights: Fallout 3, Banjo Kazooie, Final Fantasy 13, Mirrors Edge, Rage, Left 4 Dead, Sims 3, Gears of War 2, Prince of Persia, Red Alert 3 and Ghostbusters.

What did they announce besides a few minor upgrades to the Dashboard that they should have added a long time ago? Netflix is pretty badass, but dashboard updates aren't all that crazy and exciting for most of us ;)

What makes a Final Fantasy game these days, anyway? Squeenix is popping out these games with bad voice acting and generic photo-rendered anime characters with swords and technodragons. What sets FFn apart from (the ridiculously titled) Infinite Undiscovery? The FF battle and upgrade systems change every game anyway, there's no overarching story line... It's really just a brand name from what I can see.

Blue menus, white text, a red dot selector, and a white gloved cursor. That's what makes a final fantasy game.

There were a few without Cids - chocobos were in most and not all; and the summons and spells are pretty different in each one (and have different naming schemes - fire1-3 vs fire, fira, firaga). The menus are the only true constant I've been able to determine.

yeah. Admittedly I havent played X,X2 11 or 12. Namely for the altered game mechanic. 13 coming to the 360 is huge news as Sony has been advertising it as an exclusive for the PS3 for over a year now.

I dont like that its basically a single player MMO. I personally despise MMO style combat, in any game. This is pretty much the main reason I've subscribed to an MMO beyond playing a 1 week trial and uninstalling it.

I loved Lost Odyssey...please to be bringing back turn based combat.

On the other hand, I won't have to purchase a PS3 for this game and it was the one game that would require said purchase.

Yea the marketplace downloads is pretty cool, I've always wondered why they didn't offer something like that though. It's not anything particularly difficult to develop (considering the other functionality their platform already offers) so it's surprising that it took them this long to do it.

since everyone is using the same OS with the same hardware do you really have to spend that much time worrying about edge cases during the development cycle?

                • reply
                  July 15, 2008 6:24 AM

Absolutely. Though everyone is using the same hardware and OS not everyone is using the same network configurations. Both from the client to the hardware. It's also necessary to make sure that the bandwidth is there for high demand content.

If we were to just release some half assed fix for this, there would be a major uproar. Also you have to take consideration to the fact that initially when the 360 was released, having a channel to download or stream content to your computer, like Steam, was yet to be proven as a successful business model (aside from the expected demand of titles like HL2).

But now that our catalog has grown exponentially, its almost a necessity.

Minor upgrades? I've been bustin my ass working on this stuff, it's far from minor. The UI update to the dash is quite huge. However yes some elements like a broader resolution support, install to hdd, download queuing are things that could have been addressed previously.

            Really?

Dashboard: Hard for me to get excited about a firmware revision, especially when it was so badly needed (PS3 winning by a long shot on this one)

            Avatars: Ugh.

Price Drop: About time, for one, and I already have one, for two. So not a big deal.

            60 GB Version: Ok.

FFXIII: Bought a PS3 (not just for this) and am impressed enough with the hardware that I won't be buying another game for the 360 that I can get on the PS3, if I even buy another 360 game at all.

Netflix: This is really cool, but the system is pretty noisy, even when the drive isn't spinning, and they're requiring XBL Gold for the right to do it, and mine runs out at the end of the month. So unless someone else has a sale and I can get a year for $30 again, I'll never see it.

I dont really like the new dashboard (sorry two50six!), though I do think its cool as hell to be able to do all that stuff with your party. I guess I will just wait and see on the new interface. I hate the avatars already.

The Netflix stuff sounds pretty sweet, I can only wish they allow it to buffer a bit to the hard drive as Netflix keeps dropping the quality (on the PC) saying I dont have good enough connection when I do.

Remote marketplace sounds like a cool concept in theory, but lets see how it works once implemented. I dont plan on leaving my 360 turned on all of the time, its just not going to happen.

The install option will be nice on a few games to reduce the loading times. I may just get that hdmi enabled elite I have been thinking about... my 20gig hdd usually only has about 2gigs free space at any time without having to manage it all of the time.

I could give a shit about Final Fantasy as its not my thing, but I do understand the impact that will make in the industry and I think that really does put them ahead of Sony.

No, I would have been perfectly fine with that, it's a sneak peak of the next generation. Having all my 360 games on a single and being able to jump between games without having to get up and change disc would have been AWESOME. But that's not what's happening.
The ability to install games to the HDD is just like on the PS3, you're still required to put the disc in, it just speeds up load times a bit.

not really. a DVD9 is only 9.6GB. the original HDDs are 20GB (with 12GB free space). the new HDDs are 60GB (i'm assuming has 52GB free space after the system's required 8GB) and then, of course, the Elites have 120GB drives (with maybe 112GB free space?).

if you have any of the available hard drives, it's free. if you're a loser without a hard drive, you don't care enough about gaming to even own a 360. losers.

its optional, its better than not having the option at all, what solution do you want? they hand out a free 120gb harddrive to everyone? people complained before that they wanted the option once the PS3 was doing it and now you're bitching that your harddrive is too small and they should've seen this coming 2 years ago and given everyone 120gb drives from the start for no added cost or what exactly?

Yeah. I don't get the love for the ps3 about the volume. If I have the PS3 in my entertainment center, then the circulation is poor and the fans kick on if I so much as try to play a dvd. So my choices are pull it out of there in which case it is quiet, but fucks up my Wife Approval Factortm, or I can leave it in there, in which case it is so loud it sounds like a jet engine. I guess if you have your shit sitting out on a table it's pretty quiet :-/

I'm not sure if it's only on newer 360s, but the drive is stupid ridiculously loud. It's as if a vacuum were running. It's just absurd. My PS3, while not inaudible, is no where near as loud.

That's weird. My 360 never gets as loud as you are talking about, but my PS3 is absurdly loud. The 360 is in a slightly better ventilated spot in the entertainment center, so maybe that's enough to make the difference.

I just can't think of any annoucement Sony could make to save face in the current situation. They are in last place, with the most expensive hardware, and too few exclusives.

        Built in wireless

easily upgradable hard drive (up to 500gb now)

And no BC wont hurt the PS3, the PS3 is hurting the PS3, for now. The 360 is backwards compatible and I'm pretty sure that 360 titles have since trumped those of Original Xbox titles. Most people that want backwards compatibility already have an existing library or titles for the previous system and would enjoy the luxury of having 1 system that can play their previous library while owning new ones for the new generation.

That $45 or $99 could be put towards a PS3 with backwards compatibility if they made one. Also the PS2 looks pretty asstastic on big HDTV's.

For me personally, I don't want to buy another PS2 to replace my broken one and I'm not in a hurry to play the PS3 games so there is no point me buying a PS3 yet. I might consider it if they lowered the price but even then I think I'll just hold out and see if they do add backwards compatibility. The only game that can make me change my mind is the new Team Ico game. If that turns out to be good (high chance) then I will get a ps3.

If they said it would never come, I would probably just buy one anyway (when a game or two came out) but until they deny it I would rather wait. I just know if I did buy one they'll announce one with BC and i'll regret it.

It is mostly the FF announcement. That was a huge selling factor and I have atleast a few friends who were going to buy a PS3 solely for FFXIII and now aren't going to. MGS/FFXIII was supposed to be this 1 2 punch of PS3 exclusive games.

I fully expect God of War 3 to be shown and be good but it doesn't have that system seller potential that the FF series does. God of War and MGS seem to tap in to the same audience, where the FF games seem to be much broader.

Co-workers are looking to sell their ps3s on ebay now that FF13 was annouced. Apparently it was the only reason why they owned one. Sure they would play a game here and there but they rather just have one system and picked to keep the 360.

I think they will be fine with blu ray winning the HD war. Digital downloads of HD content is not going to happen anytime soon and I think the probably made that choice to lose money on the PS3 and win the HD war. But anyway, I don't care if Microsoft or Sony makes money on their consoles this generation. Neither one is going away anytime soon and they both have good systems that are fun to play.

You should care because it affects what developers they attract, what console gets release priority, and could possibly affect the next round of consoles.

I don't want to start a hijack but with cable companies charging for bandwith and the fact that they couldn't support everyone downloading HD movies I don't think it will take off for a while. But you are correct blu ray sales are slow going, but I think it will still have it's place in the next few years.

the thing that confuses me is the way they're BARELY going to start working on the 360 version as soon as the PS3 one gets done... so JAPAN will have FFXIII on ps3 first before the rest of the world. Now Square is going to start internationalizing the game and then also start development on the 360 version
so if the ps3 one gets localized first for the USA.... will square release it on ps3 first?
does localizing a game take way long? how long is it going to take square to develop the game for the 360?

              http://kotaku.com/5025033/liveblogging-square-enix-press-conference

2:02 first they will finish ffxiii in japan. and then they will start localization for english.
2:03 at that point, they will start the xbox 360 development.

This is what the OP is saying. It could very well be a shitty translation, but the implication is that work is not starting on the 360 port until it's been released on the PS3 in Japan.

LOL I don't get this mentality. If they bought a PS3 solely for FF13, then they paid at a minimum $400 + they will pay $60 for the game itself. $460 for a single game? These people are crazy. I can't think of any game I would pay $500 to play. I'm sure there's a lot of people who also want to play MGS4 and GTA4, so getting a PS3 isn't so bad in that respect, but buying a console just to play one game is retarded in my opinion.
