Morning Discussion

So it was quite the busy day, with PS3 firmware being made available again, BioWare talked about how they handle piracy, Google brought out a virtual world system and Microsoft announced the winners of it's environmentally oriented game development competition. Of course E3 is impending, so how about a pre-show guide, thanks to Nick.

        So then you've played CivRev?

Yep. It's not bad by any means, but given how much cheaper Civ IV is and how much more gameplay it offers, the only reasons to get CivRev would be a) playing over Live and/or b) you don't have a PC.

Let me know when I can play Civ 4 on my DS in bed.

Until then, CivRev is the bees knees.

I had no idea there was a DS version. That's different. What I said still applies for the 360 and PS3 versions.

Okay, cool, I was just a bit afraid you were dismissing without playing. Yeah, I know what you mean about simplified, but the Live thing is huge for me. I mean, it's not just that you can play games, but that they could actually finish in one reasonable sitting, as it is, Civ's multi has been pretty useless to me.

I agree with you, but I would like to add that they appeal to a different gaming demographic. Civ4 can be really complex and daunting for a player who nver played a Civ game before, so as I see it, it can be a good introduction and if the user wants more control, he can buy Civ4 + BTS.

Isn't this why they invented RTS? The epic sweep of Civ IV is what appeals to me, so I'm not all that pumped about CivRev.

there is a big difference in turn based and real time strategy

            July 9, 2008 6:59 AM

Yeah for a turn based strategy game Civ:Rev is the bees knees for any platform. Unfortunately it's not why I play civ games. Lets face it, it is perfectly possible to have a similar multiplayer game using civ4 if you set the turn timer low, game speed fast, small world, accelerated start and limited it to four players.

I'd say that Civ:rev is closer to a turn based version of Age of Empires/Rise of Nations than it is a Civ game.

I guess I'm saying that RTS is better for swift decision and acting, and TBS is better for micromanaging, and that's why I'm skeptical about CivRev, which is trying to be a TBS with swift decision/action. But games have successfully made that leap before -- DEFCON is a great game, and that's an RTS but is all about micromanagement.

To a certain extent micromanagement makes more sense in a game like Civ IV, since it is, after all, your empire.

Or let me put it this way: I loved Civ IV, but imo it's not really a game you can jump into casually if you fee like it. Having the option to play CivRev, where I can just dick around on my free time, is pretty sweet, imo.

and here I thought it was the 'turns' that made TBS. Micromanagement isn't necessary, just a common way to give people lots of stuff to do during their turns.

You can do that in Civ IV. You can automate cities and units in many cases and speed up the turns.

Civ Rev's gameplay is closer to Civ I's. Civ IV's is much more complex, with lots of extra micromanagement stuff added in.

It's a console specific Civ. A lot of Civ IV fans are saying that tried and true Civ strats no longer work and you really have to re-learn the game. There is an emphasis on fast moving games. Most techs come with bonuses upon researching them, all Civs have 4 specific bonuses that get unlocked through each age. It's more focused on combat and fast gameplay than on micromanagement.

One problem I noticed in the demo was that the fast gameplay caused problems. You could build a brand-new military unit, but in the 5 turns it took you to get from your city to an enemy city, you'd arrive to find your club-wielding dudes going up against Phalanxes and shit.

In the demo, I found that like Civ4 it helps to have cities that specialize in a certain area. For instance, i had a city on the coast that put out crazy huge research, a city in the plains that produced huge amounts of food, and a city really near an enemy city that was able to do 15 production/turn from the get-go. I was pumping out military units one per turn, making armies, amassing them at the border, and destroying shit almost instantly.
