PlayStation Store Update: Rock Band and GH3 DLC, Syphon Filter 3

4
This week's batch of content for the PlayStation 3's digital storefront is unsurprisingly light, owing to today's release of Kojima Productions' Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3).

As previously announced, the MTV2 Three-Pack for Harmonix's Rock Band and the Isle of Wight festival bundle for Neversoft's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock are now available on the PlayStation Store.

Other new downloadable content includes the Veteran Map Pack for EA Montreal's Army of Two, which brings two additional cooperative campaign maps and a new multiplayer map to the co-op shooter.

A complete rundown of this week's PlayStation Store update follows.

"PS1 Classics," eh? Syphon Filter 3 was such a horrible game :P

(To be fair, I enjoyed the first two, so, ahhh, don't kill me!)

They're really not taking advantage of the PSP/PS3's ability to play PS1 games :( There's so many awesome games that they could release.

I thought the newer 40GB PS3s couldn't play PS1/PS2 games? If so then what incentive do they have to port lots of PS1 games to an ever shrinking (proportionately) user base?

I also wonder how powerful are are those voices at Sony who argue that releasing old games detracts from purchase of newer games that NEED the PS3. Wasn't that one of the reasons Tretton mentioned for removing backwards compatibility? [They get cost savings from hardware, but Sony could have kept compatibility just by doing it all software if they chose to. So hardware costs can't be the only reason they dropped backwards compatibility.]

For the record I liked Syphon Filter 3, but only because I bought and played all three back to back . I thought it dovetailed in nicely with the other games and had a more interesting format than typical sequels. The only bit I didn't like was the slight variation in the art style and portrayal of the characters from game to game.

I'm pretty sure that every PS3 can play PS1 games. It's the PS2 emulation that is missing from the 40GB version.
