Morning Discussion

Good mornings folks, ready for another exciting Tuesday? So news of what's next for the iPhone came out yesterday with July 11th being the big day for the GPS-enabled 16gb version along with the 2.0 firmware including online store. Some rumors on the internets had indicated games could be upwards of $25 USD, but Sega has set the bar with Monkey Ball at a far more comfortable $10.

And also, I feel really compelled to direct you towards the newly announced Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ. I don't even know what to make of the name, it looks like the output from one of those random band generators, but must admit that barbecuing zombies does seem strongly compelling.

I'm guessing that the fervor over this iteration will be less than the initial release. I am sure there are many iPhone owners who won't be upgrading. I'm still not sure if I'm going to put my 8GB model out to pasture or not.

Yeah, its a shame 32GB didn't happen, i think that would have tipped it for most 1st gen iphoners.

You can't buy them online and from what I read each iPhone will take 10 minutes to activate in store. The apple stores are going to be a huge shit show for the first few days, if not weeks. At $200 each (even with the more expensive data plan) these things will sell like crazy.

I would have thought most people are in phone contracts already though, so i wouldn't have thought that many people are in a position to go in and buy one of these as soon as they are available.. unless they're so desperate they plan to pay out their old contract just to get one straight away.

at&t is replacing any existing contract with a new 2 year contract at purchase - not extending, replacing.

really? you guys lucked out then, from everything i've read of the providers in other countries, they are treating as any other phone in that you have to honour your original contract or buy it out before you can start this one, otherwise you'll have to pay the non-subsidised price for it (which is what i plan to do).

        June 10, 2008 6:18 AM

I am going to pretty much predict the opposite. Although there will still be a massive installed base of original iphone users, many of the phones will change hands to second or third owners. They are great pieces of hardware that will be genuinely useful for years to come

3G and GPS are nice, but i don't see myself spending $200 for that. i'm going to make the most out of my first gen and stick it out for one more year. shit, i spent $600 for it (minus the $100 rebate).

TBH the biggest new feature for me is still proper Exchange support, which you can get on the old iPhone anyway. If they had upped it to 32GB then that would have been a big deal in terms of media storage for me, but as it is the 3G and GPS are just nice to have.

I'm pissed that supposedly you have to activate them in store...

They better change that. How do you gift it? How do you buy it at an Apple store? Do you have to unpack all that crazy apple packaging in store? The iTunes at home activation was one of the coolest things about it, and now it's just like a normal phone.

Not to mention that they don't include a free dock when you buy it now. Not that it's a huge deal but it kind of cheapens the whole experience.

      • reply
        June 10, 2008 6:02 AM

they wont change the activation thing in store, it's parts of they're efforts to curb the people that bought 10 of them just to sell on eBay, and unlockers as well. If you have to activate it in the store, you are stuck with a 2yr contract, and what would be the point of unlocking it then? also, you won't be able to buy it online. at least at first. They're doing away with the activation thru iTunes.

Also, the dock isn't a big deal, it's $30 in stores, it helps cut the cost of the phone. You're saving like $200-$300 in the phone price, i can deal with buying a dock for $30 after the fact.

          June 10, 2008 6:04 AM

You are saving 200$ on the price of the phone and then paying 10$ more a month for a 2 year plan so you are paying 40$ more than the older iphone, but that 40$ is spread out over 2 years which is acceptable to most people.

i hate this argument, because ATT gave the iPhone users a special data plan... they revoked that plan and now you are on the same plan EVERY OTHER CUSTOMER has been on. You are not "paying more" for your iPhone, you got a discount for the first year.

They had already raped you by that point with the previous iPhone though, now it is subsidised i would expect an immediate contract cancellation will be impossible without returning the device, or prohibitively expensive (over here you have to pay out half the remaining monthly contract cost). I dunno i could be wrong. Thankfully here there will definitely be an easy way to buy it outright, as Vodafone has announced it will be available on pre-paid plans.

In the 5 or so countries they actually managed to find providers willing to bend to their demands, yes.. however it is definitely not just 3G that has got them providers in so many countries already for the new iPhone.

To properly compete against other phone makers they needed to sell to a lot more markets than they were, regardless of how many units they managed to shift in those.

We've heard from multiple sources that they jam signals. Our babysitters also said they were told by teachers that signals are jammed, and verified they can get zero signal at the school, and if you drive by the school, your signal drops from strong to zilch and then strong again as you pass it, and there is nothing special about the location other than there being a high school there.

A quick search turned up nada in terms of who you would report that too but it should be as simple as going to the principal and asking them to get rid of that shit and if they refuse, remind them that it is illegal and if they still refuse, try the police. Remind them that a lot of cell phone jammers block other radio frequencies, including those used by first responders. Ask them how shitty it would be if a paramedic responded to an injury of a student and couldn't communicate back.

in ANY case, at&t never extends a current contract. If you are not in your "upgrade period" yet, you can have the cust. serv. dude call Customer Service and they can do what's called an "Exception Upgrade". Everyone that has a at&t contract in good standing can do this i believe once in every contract. Then you get the same prices for a phone as a customer in their upgrade period (which is within 3 months before the contract is up) This is the way it was when I managed an at&t store. Of course, who knows if they'll do it the same way when the iPhone 3G comes out, but it looks like they'll treat it like any other phone now.

they advertised it as different, but technically, it was all the same rate plans as normal phones get. they just had the special $20/month unlimited data plan for the iPhone. Otherwise, it was all the same rate plans. they just called them "iPhone plans" in advertising..

yeah, you will definitely have to camp out. i'm sure apple only made a few thousand of them. it's not like they are planning on selling millions of them or anything. sheesh

someone paid HIM $1000 for the 1st place in line, so she could buy up all of the stock and sell them on eBay, then when she went in to buy them, they said "sorry, 1 per customer" and he made out with $1K.

      http://www.macrumors.com/2008/06/09/atandts-iphone-3g-data-plan-and-no-longer-revenue-sharing/

apparently also if you have an existing iphone plan with them, you can simply buy the new phone it doesnt extend your plan, but just replaces it, so ill have to just go up 10 bucks a month for 3G, although I dont think my area gets 3G yet. =/

      Question!

Are you required to get a data plan or can I just buy the phone at $200 and get just voice? $70 is more than I wanna pay for phone service, but at that price for the iPhone I no longer want to go with any other handset!

If they could make it sync stuff like weather and news when you're at a wifi spot though it could work pretty well.

Any smartphone without data plan is worthless. Sure you think "oh it has wifi, i'll just use that for internet" but I can't count the number of times I've used the my phone to get addresses, transfer money, etc.

with the current model, you have to sign up for a data plan first and then drop it after you're activated. new one is trickier, especially since its main advantage is the extra data.

Does anyone know if the gps actually speaks the directions like a real gps or u have to constantly look at it while driving? That would sure make a diff in how worthwhile i find the gps to be

Probably not out of the box w/ google maps, but TomTom is already onboard with iPhone GPS software.

anyone can write that type of program later (like the usual GPS companies), having the actual hardware GPS chip inside is the important part
