Console Makers Respond to April Sales Data

27
Following NPD's unveiling of April's U.S. console game and hardware sales, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony have all checked in with their take on the data that saw Nintendo's Wii and DS top the hardware charts and the Xbox 360 outsell the PlayStation 3 by a mere 900 units.

With a whopping 1.85 million copies sold, the Xbox 360 edition of Grand Theft Auto IV was the month's top-selling console title, followed by 1.12 million units of Mario Kart Wii and 1 million copies of Grand Theft Auto IV for PlayStation 3.

Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Jack Tretton claimed that "PS3 momentum is fueled by enthusiasm for Blu-ray" and "PS3 remains on pace for a breakthrough year."

"The tremendous legacy of Grand Theft Auto on PlayStation, combined with the blockbuster launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue packed a one-two punch with consumers at retail this month," Tretton added.

Nintendo marketing VP Cammie Dunaway remarked: "Our belief in appealing to a broad, diverse audience of players continues to resonate with consumers, and we look forward to continuing our outreach to an expanded audience with the launch of Wii Fit next week."

In a statement yesterday, Microsoft senior VP Don Mattrick boasted: "This year will be the largest in the history of the video game industry, with Xbox 360 leading the charge in the U.S."

I don't really see them as being the most arrogant, or atleast in this sense (they have made a lot of dumb posts) ........ but come on what should they say? "Hey guys, we tried, but with our smaller install base due to us coming in at a later year we couldn't sell as much as the 360, but hey your hardware still works!" ........

People aren't going to go out and change all their DVDs for Blu Ray. This isn't like the VHS/DVD shift, Bluray only offers better picture/sound quality whereas DVDs offered so much more than VHS did, like subtitles, different language options on the same disc, skipping from scene to scene. Until a new format is brought out that revolutionises the home movie format, we won't see another migration like the DVD one.

have you used Bluray? :s if it's anything like HD-DVD it's a lot more than just better picture quality and sound :S

also as Sony seem to have arranged for the PS3 to eb the only real choice for a bluray player out there, of course all the enthusiasts are gonna buy it, softwares upgradeable and its half the price of anything else.

I've used both BR and HD-DVD and I couldn't really give a shit about either until the price of films come down. The improvements over upscaled DVD simply are not worth it, with a few exceptions (e.g. Ratatouille).

It does depend a lot on the size of your TV and the viewing distance, but the Improvements over upscaled DVD are significant.

My argument is they do not improve the plot or acting or anything much except visual clarity.

FWIW I have a 50" 720p plasma. I've only watched 1080p stuff on my PC monitor, and not much of that, so maybe it makes a huge difference that I can't see at 720p. I don't buy it, though, because it's just something you get used to after 5 minutes, after which you are watching the same actors (and/or CGI) say and do the same things. I don't care if I can make out the button holes on someone's shirt and I don't see how it is a major improvement in most films.

FWIW I have a 61" 1080p DLP, and I think the difference is pretty striking.

Obviously more resolution isn't going to make a crappy movie better, but it I think it adds a lot to good movies for nuanced acting etc.

interactive, downloadable content, mini games, lots of smalll functions like bookmarking. I'm not saying people should go and replace all their DVD's, just that theres more than a prettier picture involved with them. Personally I'd rather have digi downloads but thats just me and at the moment that doesn't seem viable without a massive hard drive.
