Publisher THQ has announced that Volition's gangster life simulator Saints Row 2 (PS3, X360) will ship to retailers August 26, IGN reports.

Announced last September, the open-world sequel will offer two-player online co-op throughout the entire campaign, along with a redesigned city, new vehicles, expanded character customization options, and other multiplayer modes.

Was the original game a good GTA4 interim title or a decent game in its own right? I didn't play it and probably won't, but I wouldn't mind nabbing the sequel if that's the case.

it's very fun but the later parts of it are frustrating beyond comprehension

Agreed. Some of the missions get extremely difficult -- and this is coming from a GTA vet that has played each title at least twice.

really? I don't remember the missions being all that tough. I could be forgetting. I tend to do that these days.

I thought it was just different enough from GTA:SA to be good. I enjoyed it, and finished the game.

I found the controls to be much more enjoyable to play with over the GTA series. However the GTA series has less annoying nuances. I did enjoy it though.

Well it was probably the best GTA clone there was. The engine, physics etc were all great. It was fun just going around and causing mayhem GTA style on a next gen engine. I thought the missions were kinda lame though and I lost interest quickly.

With better missions it could be a great game, so heres hoping.

both crackdown and SR were enjoyable games. SR didn't have quite the polish that Crackdown had, but if you're DVD drive isn't dying you'd be able to avoid the floating driver bug - or just slow down between the major zones since that's where most of my issues came from.

Again, I declare that within a week of the GTA IV release my 360 will RRoD.

I really liked it. As said above, the game had great visuals, lots of small touches, and was generally fun to play. I beat it. The demo, while similar to the final release seemed very lifeless--so don't judge saints row on the demo alone.

For me, the big problem with Saint's Row was the humor. I didn't have a problem with it being a GTA clone (which it is, and a good one), they also tried to copy the wit, satire, and tongue-in-cheek tones that Rockstar nails so well. They just simply failed, the humor and satire in the game are lame and even the original GTA (top-down) was sharper than Saint's Row. This is what stopped me from playing it past the 5 hour mark, I just couldn't deal with it without cringing.

The game was VERY campy, so I was able to tolerate the cut-scenes.

Excellent gameplay, with tweaks addressing almost all of GTA's complaints. Bland world, story.

I'm currently replaying this badass game. The game is only difficult if you start straight in with the story missions and bypass working through the "Activity" missions first, which honestly are more fun than the story even though they don't progress story. I loved this game and can't wait for the sequel. The fact that this sequel has added helicopters, planes, etc. and GTA:IV is removing them makes me almost want it more. Almost.
