Obsidian, the company behind KOTOR2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and the new Alien RPG, have announced their new game.
They describe it as:
“A modern day espionage focused action/RPG that takes you on a suspenseful ride in the vein of James Bond, Jack Bauer, and Jason Bourne. Take a wet-behind-the-ears greenhorn agent up through the ranks to become a bona-fide super spy.â€Â
On the combat:
“Battle system is similar to Mass Effect but have more in common with Uncharted. It revolves around real time combat with an emphasis on gun play and high tech gadgets.â€Â
Sounds FUCKING AWESOME. I love Obsidian, I love espionage and spy movies, and I can't wait for thsi game.
PC, 360, and PS3. whee!!

I really like the idea of talky, western RPGs adopting a very 3rd-person shooter, Gears-esque mindset for the action. There's nothing wrong with a turn-based, tactical RPG, and I do really like those, but it sort of feels like the true hybrids in the vein of Deus Ex and Bloodlines could make a hot resurgence on the consoles in third person.

I'm trying to be nice :)
Also, I have to acknowledge that there are big exceptions. Like the Persona series, which doesn't really do anything new with the combat system but thrives on its fun and innovative "go-to-school" gameplay.
Is that a genre now? The go-to-school genre? We can include Persona 3, Bully, um... Harry Potter?

I'm afraid of the "action" in the action rpg descriptor ..hopefully it's not all stealth and gunplay, hopefully there's some sleeping with hot kgb agents and shaking martinis tthrown in the mix as well ..more RPG less shooting the badguys ..but if I simply must shoot the bad guys can I have a wrist watch laser or garrote? how about a collapsable blackjack/chloroform rag so I can simulate my real life escapades
