Morning Discussion

So how is this Monday finding Shackers? Faylor brought us the week's release list, and I couldn't help but notice that the new Advance Wars DS is out, hopefully leading to many a Shackbattle with the new freshly implemented online Wifi Connection. Also popular around these parts has been the Burnout series, so you might be interested in Remo's review of Burnout Paradise.

Yeah, I've been pondering it myself. I keep one at work for work related stuff. The auto-backup feature is great too, except that it is a space hog. Fortunately they zip up really nice, being text and all.

ScrewTurn Wiki is free and small and has a desktop only edition. I use it to keep a lot of personal information straight on my home PC

There's a standalone version of twiki that can run without using a server. I use it on one of my machines to hold background and timeline information for a novel I am "writing". Works a lot better than trying to dig through notebooks and find info.

The problem I have with offline ones like TiddlyWiki is after awhile the gets unwieldly. It's slow opening and rendering in a browser and saving (if you have it always generate a backup) grows longer and longer. If you do go that route, plan on dividing up your information into multiple files and link them to one another.

I'd recommend going with an online solution that you can install on your own server. There are lots of those including Wikipedia - http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Download

Though I'd recommend going with one that has a WYSIWYG editor.

We used to use a wiki at work for all of our internal planning and evergreen-type documents. We've dropped that and moved it all to a Basecamp though. It works much better for what we do, since it as calendaring and to-do lists and stuff.
