Morning Discussion
Let's kick off the week with a fresh discussion post, shall? So the big news this week is going to be CES in Vegas, with lots of electronics and such that are germane to us, in fact Nick already has the Microsoft speech covered. Closer to home, the staff here brings you a new ShackCast if you'd like something to start the week off with, and Faylor brings the week's releases as usual.

Man I hate XBOX Live. All last night I was getting the stupid Live signup is unavailable... message and I haven't been able to recover my gamertag. Hate. Apparently this is a wide-spread problem since Christmas?

Yeah it's so frustrating that my Live email addy and password are so long to type using the on-screen keyboard. I should just grab my USB keyboard I guess. The delays during each stage are so frustrating too ugg! It literally let's me get right to the end most times, after agreeing to terms and it says it's downloading my profile, then it halts and eventually flashes the error. Ah well!

I agree - It's actually a pretty painful process to transfer a XBL ID between different consoles with how time consuming it can be. A lot of times it is just easier to have folks sign in as guests rather than bring their gamertag to, say, a Halo 3 LAN utilizing splitscreen.
It wouldn't be so bad if it was a one-time process either: every time you sign in with a gamertag on a friend's console, for example, you still have to go through the whole download process. It's too much of a pain in the ass for what is ultimately just a login name!
I've never understood why it couldn't be simple.

Notahijack. So if I return my current xbox, hard drive and all, and get another one, what am I going to run into as far as problems? I know the save games go bye-bye (naturally), but is Microsoft going to give me hell about redownloading stuff? I've bought a few XBLA games, and I'd rather not lose them for good.

They tell you to just be signed onto XBL if you want to play. If it was a warranty replacement you can go through a big hassle of having them create a dummy account that they associate the games with so you can play offline but you can never get rid of that dummy account or you are back to playing while connected only.
