Morning Discussion

So yesterday was pretty happening, with an official announcement of Deus Ex 3 (with movie!) and Nintendo's roll out of the Minna no Nintendo channel in Japan. I think in regards to Deus Ex we're all just a little excited to see what direction they're taking the game in. And apprehensive. But mostly excited. So how's that holiday shopping going?

    I'm a little pumped for DX3.

I loved the crap out of 1, hated 2 (only played for about an hour or so) and think this can be knocked out of the park if handled properly.

Something about my computer at the time, but I couldn't get 1 to run at over 5 fps (other equivalent games ran perfectly fine)

I never played more than 5 minutes into it, and never knew what the hype was all about =/

If you've not played more of it yet, I'd suggest you do. I'm almost 3/4 through again, and it's still fantastic. I'm not using any graphical updates/mods or anything, so it's a little fugly, but the play and dialogue are still very engaging.

Warren was also involved in the abortion that was DX2. So it could go either way.

He was involved, but he was definitely marginalized. That game was more Harvey Smith than anything, at least from what I've read.

The fact that he let Harvey Smith make the decisions he did without stepping in (he voiced his apprehensions yet absolute trust in Smith's decision-making in interviews before release) speaks of some lack of judgement.

Yeah, I don't know how universal ammo stayed in that game. :(

so you're contradicting yourself? game's aren't made by 1 person, nor does 1 person's involvement determine quality or success.

Well if the trailer is any indication, even though its just animated pre rendered 3d stuff, it will have a really neat and classy art style.

I can't wait to see what kind of anti-aug stuff is in place in this world. A post-modern or steampunk revision of The Chrysalids kind of mindset would be awesome.

Though, it looks augs are tolerated officially, I bet there's gonna be open hate on the street.

2 gets better after the first hour. of course, it's been years since I've played it, but that's what I remember

Maybe I should add DX1 to my list of must play games before I die. It currently has the Fallouts, Planetscape, and a bunch of the final fantasy's I've missed.

Just not enough hours in the day any more.

i had all these fond memories of DX1...then reinstalled to play and the game is just SOO clunky and as a FPS is hard to play compared to the awesomeness we're all used to now.

Its the story and the characters that make it hold up. I agree if you go into it thinking of it as an FPS it would be a huge letdown now. But playing through the first time watching things unfold and becoming much more complicated then what you thought at first is a great experience. Its the narative and world they created that makes the game so interesting.

Developing your character and choosing what skills and augments to use also make it worth at least a second playthrough.

This is why you have to give the game more than an hour of play. It starts off rather simple like an FPS, but the FPS aspects aren't what makes it. As you get further, everything becomes more complicated, but in a good way.

I've started fallout and planetscape several times each but I keep getting distracted by something new. Luckily I have a laptop on the way that will be perfect for these old classics.

I'm holding out for DX 10.1. From what I've heard that will be the patch that makes it fun.
