Morning Discussion
Hope everyone had a lovely vacation, and failing that at least a nice weekend. To see this week's new releases, none of which have combat as good as Mass Effect's, check out Faylor's roundup.

No, I'm pretty sure it's horrible. The only way to fight without instant death is to hide behind things more often than Gollum, the computer has uber-powers that make you fall over like Stephen Hawkings and then it shoots you. Oh yeah and the AI isn't worth shit. I don't know why they didn't give control over to other players, I'd play that game in a heartbeat. Why can RPGs either only be 1 player or a fucking bajillion?

I think my primary beef is the fight with counselor troi, because like I said, she can just make you fall down and it's not stasis. I don't see that as a good mechanic like whatsoever. It just made that one fight so very very hard. Mostly it's those weird boss encounters, random lethality and how the autosave system arbitrarily saves (well, doesn't). I try to enjoy the combat but usually its just getting in the way of me try to play the RPG aspect of the game.

I'm almost sure he's talking about the Noveria boss fight with the matriarch My main gripe with that is that they should have made us go there last. It's clearly the hardest fight in the game and to go there randomly at lvl 12 is suicide. They should have just laid out 2 planets and then "unlocked" noveria afterwards, perhaps with the explanation that her daughter sensed her there or something

Sounds like you suck dude. I use my teammates as bait and then I do that super badass Assault Rifle move and then I'm all like "BRATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATAT" and the bad guys are like "OHSHIT*DIES*". I throw in a few Unity's and Adrenaline's to keep the bait alive, and I have had very few combat encounters go screwy on me.

I dunno man. Playing on Normal, I got knocked over by biotic powers no more than three times during my 28 hour playthrough. I was playing as a soldier with an assault rifle, but biotic powers never really touched me during a fight.
As far as the friendly AI goes, it wasn't all that bad. Sometimes they took the good cover spots and sometimes my biotic friendly would break bad and get in everyone's grill for some reason, but overall I never found them doing anything too terribly dumb.
Maybe the wide variety in character options and squad setups is what is causing some people to be fine with the combat and some people to have issues. It would help to say what class you were, who your teammates are, and what difficulty. -
Honestly, I think you are doing it wrong. I admit, I had a few restarts in the beginning due to taking a rocket/plasma cannon to the face, but once I figured out that taking said rocket/plasma cannons to the face equals instant death, I adapted and kept my head down and stayed behind cover. Now I'm level a level 37 Shock Trooper with ridiculous amounts of health, and between master Immunity, Overkill and Adrenaline, I can single handedly destroy pretty much anything the game has thrown at me thus far. Did I expect to be Master Chief at the beginning? Obviously not. Did I expect to be a bad mother fucker by the end? Yes, and I am.
I don't understand how you can fault a game for an intentional cover mechanic meant to keep you alive if you use it properly. I also rarely have issue with my squads AI, and I find the characters I use complement my soldier's abilities very well to the point where I find them useful (almost). Turn on Automatic skill use for your squad AI and make an effort to build their complimentary skills properly.
I get the feeling you're trying to play the game like you're some kind of super hero juggernaut death star destroyer right from the start. Or Master Chief. You're not (at least not until late game). You're a human pawn sent on a suicide mission to prove humanity is worth a damn against superior forces.
This isn't Halo, it's not an FPS first, RPG second, and because of that I find the combat more than adequate as a necessary filler between plot and character development. Could it be better? Yes. Is it the god-awful, pox upon humanity you and Remo make it out to be? No. -
if you set them to use their offensive powers at will and use the right d-pad alot to target enemies, they usually help you out killing people and stuff. the AI still sucks, but i haven't died and my squad has rarely died in the last 15 levels or so. i'm playing on veteran, aim assist off. only have to take cover in a few situations, like when i get low on health.

I take it the post about it's combat was sarcasm? I thought it's combat was great.
The only thing that drove me nuts is that the "stuff to do on every planet" turned into a repetitive drive Mako 100 goddamn miles over mountain to bunker that looks the same as every other planets bunker. I just beat the game yesterday completing all the side missions, about 36 hours of gameplay, and I honestly don't think I'll ever do the side missions again, which kind of limits my abilitty of ever getting the level 60 achievement. Oh well.-
Ah, thought I'd add, I played as a Vanguard, so I can't comment on how enjoyable the other classes are. Lift + throw never got old; the Carnage ability with the shotgun was pretty badass as well. In all fairness to it's combat side, the abilities are definitely limited compared to their previous games, and I could see something like the solider class being dull to play.
