Morning Discussion

Friday here once again, quite thankfully enough. So did you see the Jam Sessions contest? It's pretty awesome as far as these things usually go. So what are you playing this weekend? I think I'm playing Go To Conferences a bit much, but that's an okay game sometimes too. Enjoy!

    Valve bricking orange boxes

I am still pissed about having bought Orange Box from Steam. It's permanently censored (TF2 and Ep2) since Valve registered a heavily censored version they created for all buyers with a german IP. If I had bought the game on CD from a shop around and validated myself as 18+, I could have gotten the uncensored version.

email valve and ask them to change it?

Have you tried setting the language to English? I don't know the details, but the censorship is supposed to be in only if the language is set to German.

Doesn't help. The Steam product itself is permanently registered to be the censored version without regard to the chosen language. There are some hacks you can apply to the game resources to remove the cuts, but it's all very messy.

also its not smart to play around with the tf2 files out of fear of the account getting banned for cheating.
have the same problem, wanted to buy it over steam but the ip issue led me to buy the retail. unfortunately none of the shops i went to had the fucking uk version and the two onlineshops i asked told me that they were sold out and it would take a week. so yeah, instead of playing the beta early or getting an uncensored version i ended up with a censored retail box two weeks+ later than half of the shack.
what is more hilarious is that neither hl2 or episode one which are in the same dvd are censored which means that the game is usk 18+.

Yeah. Good thing I didn't get burned by this, the store I bought my key from refunded me immediately. It's pretty fucked up though.

They priced the game according to territory and don't want Americans/Europeans buying the cheaper Asian price.

I don't think they're in the business of blocking random Orange Box purchasers from playing the game they bought.

I'm thinking there's something wrong with the product that was bought in asia.

yeah i think it's not about them being greedy.

You can't purchase any THQ game from steam in Australia anymore. Lucky i was fortunate enough to buy CoH before this happened and i can still play it.

THQ must of cracked the shits that they were'nt getting the overpriced $$$ from retail sales.

Either that or EB and co cracked the shits and forced them to play this hand.

Because they make different deals in different countries. It's entirely common for games to have different publishers in other parts of the world.

      TLDR: Fuck EA, not Valve.

      http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=340069&cid=21123581

The foreign retailers are offering clients a refund for the bricking, Valve does have not only a somewhat legitimate reason but they also offer an alternate solution to getting their games, plus their pricing structure is more than reasonable with the aussie $ how it is.

also there was a thread of people buying the games cheaper in one location so they can play it in their (not cheaper). it was basically 20.00*us* for the orange box. So valve blocked those people as they should not be playing that copy.

This also doesn't bode well because I'm going to be travelling/living around SE asia and australasia for a while, and if theres a general trend of shit breaking itself every time you move, I'm not going to be too happy.
