GameTap Approaches 1,000 Games, Offers Free Sam & Max

GameTap, the Turner Broadcasting-owned PC digital distribution platform, will celebrate the addition of its 1,000th game on November 15. With the milestone less than a month away, the lead-up will be marked by a number of high profile game releases for paying members.

Subscribers will gain access to Mercury Steam's creepy shooter Clive Barker's Jericho (PC, PS3, X360) on October 23, the same day it hits retail. The conclusion to the current season of Cyan Worlds' episodic series Myst Online: Uru Live (PC) follows November 1, with the second season of Telltale Games' episode-based adventure franchise Sam & Max (PC) beginning November 8.

Along with its new and original games, GameTap will continue adding older PC and console titles to its lineup each week. Codemasters' self-explanatory Brian Lara International Cricket 2007 (PC, PS2, X360) and KD Vision's RTS Maelstrom (PC), both of which are slated to release on the platform today, represent its latest titles.

The company has also updated its selection of free games, which offers non-subscribers an ever-changing glimpse of GameTap's total library. This week's free titles include Telltale Games' Sam & Max Episode 4: Abe Lincoln Must Die (PC), Appaloosa Interactive's Jaws Unleashed (PC, PS2, Xbox), Capcom's Vampire Savior (PSX, SAT, ARC) and Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors (PSX, ARC), and 42 others.

I'd be more interested in Gametap if you actually got to keep the games you played on the site. It's just not worth it, in my opinion, to pay a monthly fee in order to play old games (in most cases - that's the heart of the Gametap line-up). Nostalgia is great and all, but it's not as cool as you might think to go back and play some really old favorite. They just don't hold up well at all, in most cases.

That would defeat their whole business model since people would sign up for a month and download tons of games and then cancel. Also, there is a lot of new content on there (ex Overlord was released on gametap a month after it came out). They're coming out with more and more newer games all the time.

What I do is sign up for 1 month every once in awhile to play added games that I didn't think were worth the retail price and so never purchased. Games like Thief 3 and Deus Ex 2. $10 for one month lets you catch-up on all those games you never played for whatever reason. I think it's very reasonable deal and there aren't many of them anymore.

Fuck that, you don't need to just be nostalgic to like old games. None of the games in their library are games I have played before 2004. You don't need nostalgia to appreciate good game design.

And I prefer owning games too, but FFS that's nearly a thousand games, many of them good or great (...and Daikatana), for $10 a month. Totally worth it.

A lot of the games aren't very old. They've got the entire Hitman series, Thief 3, Overlord, the new Sam and Max games, and they're adding more regularly. There's a lot more to their linup than old arcade and console games.

The focus is definitely not on retro games anymore. For what I've paid in subscription fees, I could have bought and kept maybe 3 new PC games - instead I've played and enjoyed about 20 so far, not including the ones I try out briefly.

The subscription is well worth it. Look again. You'd be surprised.

While I appreciate the opposing opinions here, I'm not really seeing any argument that makes me want to try this service out other than, "Yeah, they have some of the latest games available to play for a month." This ignores the fact that if you aren't able (or planning) to finish the games you try out during your paid month, you're screwed since you don't get to keep them.

This seems like a huge money-sink with not a whole lot of payback. I was going to sign up to play Sam & Max but even that's available to keep in boxed form.

I'm one of the most pessimistic, negative people around and even I can see the value in it ...so, I dunno dude.

what you're saying is you cant play the games installed on your computer, after your membership expires ?
