Evening Reading

So I did play a bit of the Unreal Tournament 3 Demo and well... it's Unreal Tournament but a much prettier and also harder to spot items and powerups. I am looking forward to the single player campaign (wtf?) and as Nick's UT3 preview covered something other than team dm and ctf. Oh and craptacular annoying menus! Nice!

Lastly, hopefully a lot of people have noticed some pretty major speed bumps on the FileShack public servers as we're still fiddling around with things but wait estimates should be more accurate and speeds should be faster. Work has been slowly plodding along on some revamps to Shacknews as well. Really slowly.. but we're trying!

I agree with you on the whole UT3 menus thing, Steve. That and the stripped-down (at first glance) options were a bit disappointing. Still they've got some time between now and release to iron that stuff out. I hope.

A lot of people are agitating for the original UT99 browser on the official forums. It really was perfect. I think it's a problem of them not wanting to get too far away from the console version..so again we get a fucking because they are doing a console version and it needs to be "simple".

For PC users, the UT99 interface was perfect. If they want to spiffy it up and make it look all 3D like Windows Vista and shit, go ahead. But that core layout/navigation/functionality worked really, really well. No need to fuss with that.

Hell, even if they embedded the classic UT99 browser option in a console command that we'd have to add to a startup shorcut, it would nice to at least have the option available.

yeah thats exactly why i think they are punting on UT3. Going with gamespy also was a declaration of "hey we dont wanna have to support this when its done...lets just hand it off to gamespy" There just way too much money in the console biz to do that much extra work for PC gamers.

I don't blame them. PC users are a bunch of fussy twats with an overblown sense of entitlement and an unwillingness to pay for software while spending insane amounts on the hardware to run it all. If I were in the industry, I'd have said FUCK ALL Y'ALL years ago. Like, back in '99 after I got my PS2 dev kit and managed to get my shit up and running on it. And I've been a hardcore PC gamer for ages.

I'm willing to bet consoles have just as many people like the pc except not percentage wise. In fact I bet the reason pc users are more elitist is because honestly it seems like that is all you have left who is playing many pc games. The average user either doesn't play a pc game or they run into some retarded problem that the developers figure they could patch later and give up.

It forgets my video settings too. I try to change it so it won't look like shit, but it tells me I need to restart UT3 in order to do so, so I comply only for it to not remember my settings. What the fuck kind of demo is this?

A broken one. They didn't do themselves any favors. They menus, the settings not saving and not bothering to tell people that half the stuff in the final game isn't in the demo..so people freak out.

Menus I can deal with, the gimped player physics are what really bothers me. The weapons do really hardcore old style damage, especially the new Link Gun, but the movement speeds are not nearly as fast to complement that. I'd want higher jumps faster run speed and everything just kicked up another notch or so.

I disagree. It deathmatch it's fast and furious, almost blinding. In CTF it's just enough. In almost all respects it's UT99 but improved as opposed to the UT2k games. I think a lot of people like the first UT style and some prefer the 2k way of doing things. Personally, after spending 30 minutes playing I knew it was UT99 all over again and that made me very, very happy.

Headshots are WAY too easy though. I think the bounding box for a headshot must be huge. I was getting them without even having to try.

sounds a bit like UT99. I remember hitting the neck or collarbone, and it would be counted as a headshot.

Perhaps due to backlash from UT2003/2004 being so strict about headshots hitting the head?

I think when they first released UT2K4 (maybe it was after the demo) that they were also missing a lot of the advanced menu options which they later added.

in this day and age, why is it so fucking hard to make a decent menu? specifically the idiots over at Dice and their horrific BF2 system. FFS it's laggy as all fuck. You have f'in beta testers, ask them "Hey idiot, is this a shitty menu? Why?" and then listen to them and fix it!!! just steal blatantly from a game that does it well! stop having menus that take up a gig of ram!!

Holy shit if there was one thing that completely kept me from playing BF2, it was the menu system. It's soo clunky. I think valve has nailed the menu system except for the fact that most games load up a 3D background instead of something static. Yes I now the -console cheat.

It may have stolen sales away from the game, but at least it was a great demo. Perhaps Epic thought through some twisted logic that a shitty demo would result in more full game purchases?

      My biggest disappointments are:

      1) The lighting. It makes everything look so washed out.
      2) Lack of crosshair customization. All I want is a simple dot. Hopefully that's something that'll be in the full version.
      3) The weapon bar. Pretty, but far harder to read at a glance than previous iterations.
      4) Nerfed double jump. It seems so worthless now.
      5) The music. Where is my supercharging fuck shit up music?
      6) Flak cannon secondary fire arc. I would rather it leave my barrel with an initial velocity in the direction of where I'm pointing.

And I guess the menus suck too. Mostly nitpicks, I guess. I did notice that my mouse sensitivity seemed to be affected by framerate; it felt lower when my framerate was high but once things got choppy it seemed to jump up noticeably.

With all the competing titles coming out, Epic haven't done themselves any favours releasing this demo in it's current state. I know it's a 'beta demo' but most people saw it more as a demo than a beta. Which is a shame, because I'm sure the final product will be great.

I'm in multiplayer overload right now, it's ridiculous. There's just too much. TF2, Halo 3, Quake Wars, UT3... I can't play all this. I loaded up UT3 and it's cool but man more than any of those other games it gave me a feeling of "Ah yes here is the most current iteration of this series." At this point I think it's too late for me to start diving into anything other than Halo 3 with some TF2 when Shackers are on the servers.

When playing this beta (See what I did there?) it really felt like playing UT99 with beautified graphics. Considering I played UT99 for about 4-5 years straight it was very easy to hop in and play like I used to. Unfortunately my computer doesn't allow me to play the game at its current potential so everything looks mushed but playing through the maps maybe two or three times I was easily able to run the course of a map and pick up armor, ammo, guns, without running around wondering to go.

Considering quite a bit of code, graphic textures, and god knows what else was stripped from the game to keep the size of the download down I'm pleased in the direction the core-game is going but with some structural problems looming overhead. The Menu system isn't terrible but it's not the best. The buttons to navigate from here there and everywhere are far too separated. Everything needs to be brought in tighter so nothing is missed. Maybe have a panel to adjust options with tabs on the top and bottom to navigate to other menu sections. But I wouldn't be surprised if they completely overhauled the menu system by launch even though it looks like they worked very hard to implement the overly done zoom-in hover-over mouse effect withaboringfont.

I was never a fan of UT2003/4. The entire UT2K_ period felt like they were trying to find a new crowd of people to soak in when they really left the roots of Unreal Tournament behind. It's good to see that the fourth installment is going back to its roots and I hope they don't try to adventure too much in their future games (like reimplementing dodge-jump or Adrenaline or some stupid shit).

Why is everyone calling this a demo of the game, anyways?

I think it's to do with their approach to make it cross platform from the very beginning. Now I know everyone will jump at me and say please shut up console FPS games are as good if not better than pc. That's not the issue here, but I've noticed this sort of stuff with cross platform fps.

MOH: Airborne, Timeshift and now UT3 among others. As soon as I started those games there is something about them that feels different. Whether it's special effects or the field of view or the menus but something feels different. I didn't get that feeling when I played Stalker or HL2 Episode 2 or ET:QW.

My main issue is that it is very hard to make out other players due to the color scheme and how busy the sets are. Everything is very muted, not bright and poppy like the previous games. On top of that there is tons and tons of detail in the environments and backgrounds. It looks great but for a very very fast paced game this isn't the best way to go, at least to the extent that they went.

Just a little less set clutter and a bit more color differentiation between the environments and the players and IMO it would play better. It looks great but that style works better for something a bit more tactical, not fast and twitchy.
