Odin Sphere Dev Debuts Gorgeous 2D Wii Title
Titled Oboro Muramasa Youtouden--a name that will no doubt be modified should it reach North America--the game appears set in a mystical rendition of feudal Japan, complete with samurai warriors and a towering blue-skinned cyclops.
An action RPG much like Odin Sphere, the title will make use of the Wii's distinctive capabilities for sword and other attacks. According to the accompanying text, it will compensate for the tastes of both casual players and those hardcore RPG fanatics that love to grind levels.
Published by Marvelous Entertainment, Oboro Muramasa Youtouden is expected in Japan this winter. No word on a North American release yet, though Atlus, which published Odin Sphere in North America, is a likely possibility.

It's really too bad all 480p games running off my Wii don't look very good on my HDTV. Considering the emphasis on sprite quality from these guys I really hope Vanillaware decides to move to a high definition platform for their next project..

I don't claim to be an expert, but why would a game like this be more expensive to develop on the Xbox 360 or PS3? If these are being hand drawn then final resolution shouldn't matter as they are probably already scaling the artwork down from ultra high res sources. Also considering the processing power of the HD consoles, they could deal with a lot more engine overhead and forgo any major engine optimizations. Hell, they could probably just brute force their PS2 engine onto either HD platform with little effort.
I couldn't see this game doing well on the Xbox 360 either, but this type of game is a clear option for the PS3 especially considering the a person specifically after this game is going to pick up whatever hardware they need to play it.-
It would not be more expensive to dev on the xbox 360 for sure. They have XNA which doesn't coast practically anything to use which provides full verxtex shadders, 3d assets, excellent 2d vector and sprite routines.
I think the mentality of devs are that people pay big bucks for the 360 and ps3 do not want 2d games on those systems. They think they have to build full blown 3d games.
Its just that this is not the case we want both 2d and 3d, which is a shame, hopefully down the road devs will bring more games like this to 360 and ps3 there is no reason not too.

I don't know about Microsoft's attitude towards non-Arcade games, but Sony often prohibits 2D games on its platforms. It's not an issue of devs not wanting to make thetm (although it can be an issue with publishers), it can be platform holders too. I think it's very unlikely Nintendo has that same mentality right now, given stuff like Trauma Center and Big Brain Academy.

I don't understand how this statement could be possible. The PS2 had way more 2D games than the Gamecube and Xbox combined. Nearly every single NIS release and many Atlus releases on the PS2 have been 2D. Disgaea for the PS3 is practically a 2D game. When has Sony ever prohibited 2D games on their platforms?

Speaking from experience, this was very true (last generation, at least). Sony/Microsoft didn't want 2D games, because they wanted 3D content to prove how awesome their hardware was. In turn, publishers didn't want 2D content because the console manufacturers didn't want it, and because of the perceived notion that consumers didn't want it either. There's plenty of examples to prove them wrong, but that was the situation.
Things improved a bit as the console cycle went along, but even today I'd hesitate pitching a pure 2D game to a publisher; it can certainly be done, but it's just one more mountain to climb.

Intresting article..... * Cough Cough*
You are totally right, I bought a special Sony 4:3 HD tv just for the Wii and my old school xbxo and ps2 makes a huge difference the Wide screen kills a 480p game not enough pixels
If only the big N had the high rezs of up to 1080p on there system would of made such a difference just to crank the rez and nothing else.
