Report: Microsoft to Slash Xbox 360 Price by $50

Following rumors earlier in the month based on analyst reports, The Hollywood Reporter is now claiming a price cut to Microsoft's Xbox 360 is imminent, citing an anonymous source in the retail sector. The cut--supposedly to take place on August 8th--will amount to a $50 reduction, although no specific model of the system was indicated.

"From a hardware standpoint, holiday 2007 looks like a very opportune time for an [Xbox 360] price cut," said International Development Group analyst Jason Anderson to Shacknews. "I'm a little less certain though, because we had been expecting to see something on that front at E3."

Microsoft rival Sony last month announced that it would cut prices to the existing 60GB model of its PlayStation 3 console by $100 to a sum of $499 beginning this August. The company plans to eventually phase out the 60GB version of the PS3, as well as introduce a new $599 model that includes an 80GB hard drive and a copy of Evolution Studios' Motorstorm.

Anderson divulged that his firm had already factored an Xbox 360 price drop into its forecast models, but with the company's showing at E3 having gone without an announcement, he isn't sure what Microsoft has planned.

"I can't see any reason why [Microsoft would issue a price cut] before Halo 3," he added. "The counterargument would be, presumably your true hardcore Halo fans have already purchased an Xbox 360."

When contacted for comment, a Microsoft rep issued the following statement: "We have no announcements to make on pricing at this time."

With Halo 3 due out in two months, cutting the price of the 360 would be a very dumb move. Microsoft will move tons of consoles; no reason for a price cut.

Of course, that doesn't mean it won't happen; I just think it's unnecessary.

Yup that's why my pick for the timing is after Halo 3 is out, before the holidays.

I think the majority of people that were going to buy a 360 for Halo 3 already have. Not all of the fratboys, but most of them.

"Were" wrong? It hasn't happened yet. My bet is that Halo 3 doesn't push as many 360's as people are saying as a shitload of people already own one for GoW, Crackdown, everything else.. Or were you referring to my tongue in cheek "fratboys" comment?

Halo 3 is going to have a bigger marketing push then Halo 2 did. It's ridiculous to say that a game like that won't sell consoles. Would you say the same for MGS or a new Zelda title? I doubt it.

I never said Halo 3 wouldn't sell consoles, just not as many consoles people are expecting as the people that were into Halo 1 and 2 (and 3 as well) already have an XBOX 360 in anticipation and have played Gears..

I am curious to see how many XBOX 1's were sold for Halo 2 vs Halo 1.

i don't see why it would be dumb, it will just mean that halo 3 will move even more consoles. or maybe i'm missing something.

My reasoning is that, with Halo 3 being released, Microsoft will move a ton of Xbox 360s--there are assuredly those who are waiting for the game's release to get the console--so why cut the price? They'll sell a ton of 360s due to Halo's popularity regardless of how much the system costs.

but again if the price is lower then Halo 3 will move even more consoles so i don't see why it's dumb, unless they really can't afford to lower the price, but i'm assuming if this rumor is true then they are at a point with the costs where they can. i'm surprised they've held off on a price drop this long as it is considering how much the Wii is outselling the 360 each month.

This (http://shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=14819589#itemanchor_14819589) is my main point. MS will move consoles this holiday regardless of whether or not there's a price cut, so as it stands, I don't think there's any reason to slash the price.

Yeah, I still don't get it though. They'll move even more if they cut it. If they can afford to do the cut why not take advantage of their position to have a price cut coincide with all these great games? Seems like a great move to me, especially with Nintendo closing in and PS3 sales supposedly picking up.

They are actually making money on the Premium from what I have heard. Why would they cut that profit just when their killer app is about to come out? H3 will sell 360s.

Not only Halo but Mass Effect, Bioshock, COD4, GTA4.

MS is going to move a ton of consoles this holiday with or without a price cut. If I were them I'd wait till early 08 when the post holiday software flood will put them in a slump.

I wonder if perhaps it is being done in a pr move. The whole world heard about MS expanding their warranty to 3 years on a console (thats a first isn't it?) due to problems still plaguing it. Is it also possible this is just a way to toss fencers, worried about having a dead console, a bone?

I think it's to cover the $50 bucks to ship it out to them when it breaks 1 day after their warranty :P
