Disgaea 3 Coming to PlayStation 3

Japanese developer and publisher Nippon Ichi Software has announced that it will be bringing the next installment of its popular Disgaea strategy RPG series to PlayStation 3. In an announcement initially made at Sony's PlayStation Premiere event in Tokyo and further confirmed with a press release on the publisher's official site, Disgaea 3 was stated as hitting Japanese retail shelves "this winter."

Previous main Disgaea titles have been released on PlayStation 2, with a PSP remake of the original game already out in Japan and due to ship in North America later this year.

The two released Disgaea 3 screenshots are dated 2008, suggesting that the game may be expected on the far end of the winter season. No explicit mention was made of a North American release, nor has NIS America, the publisher's United States division, made any announcements regarding Disgaea 3.

Looking at the graphics, I don't see why they would release this on the PS3. I would think they would sell more on the PS2. For example, they would have had my sale if it was a PS2 title.

I agree, seems like a pretty risky move.

It's unlikely this will be to PS3 only. According to Nippon Ichi's north american website, both Disgaea and Disgaea 2 were released for both PS2 and PS1 - Disgaea 2 is just one year old. Actually, all of their current games seem to be made for PS1 too:

Their games are pretty good, but fairly simple technically, so I guess they can release on several generations without too much hassle.

If anything, maybe they'll drop PS1 support. But releasing a PS3-only title is quite unlikely if the icons on the website are correct.

Coming to think of it, I can't find information on the PS1 releases anywhere. So I'm probably wrong, they might be PS2 only. Although I find it a bit weird/redundant to have the generic PS logo (I've always tied that to PS1) with the PS2 logo on the page.

That's the PlayStation family logo, it's used for games on any PlayStation platform.
