I felt that way until I bought GH on impulse and shackhype.
There is something strangely satisfying about the whole thing.
For me, it was partially that it was something *new* - it's a different way of interacting with the game through a different controller. The true "rocking out" aspect came into play when moving up to hard and expert and nailing oh-my-fucking-god-that-sequence-is-impossible-HOLY-FUCKING-SHIT-I-DID-IT parts of songs. -

So then why do guitar hero fans need to feel like they're "rocking out" for it to make sense?
I'm sure plenty of people don't like guitar hero, but you're talking like somebody who's never played it. The game is fun, and that's all that matters. It has a very broad appeal. When I first got Guitar Hero 1, it went from "yeah people say that's fun" before, to a whole night of laughter and another friend instantly buying it the same night after.

I play real guitar, and I was just kind of meh about the Guitar Hero thing until I tried it in a kiosk when GH2 came out.. There are a few songs in that game that I can actually play, so I wanted to see the difference.
Turns out being able to play the song on a real guitar helps immensely (although I kept getting thrown off by wanting to 'strum' the real rhythm rather than the one on the screen).... and getting points for playing well made me keep playing. Ended up standing in Gamestop for like 4 hours that day. :)-
Nice! I play guitar as well and like you I had trouble at least on easy and medium as far as wanting to strum the real rhythms. It's different once you get to hard and expert though. It's much more like the real song as far as struming goes and much more satisfying to play once you get the hang of it.

When i first heard about guitar hero, I was pretty meh. Sounded kind of gimmiky like those arcade games they used to have. But then I went to my brother's place one christmas and he had it set-up with 2 guitars, I'd figure I'd see what the fuss was about. Immediatly I understood its appeal. It's amazingly fun, entertaining and challenging. And yes it does make you feel like your "rocking out" like a fucking bad ass!

I'm with Serpico74 on this. For me personally, it'll be the most fun game coming out this year and probably next year.
I am comfortable stating this because GH2 was the most fun game since it came out, and GH1 before it. Sure I still enjoy other games, but Guitar Hero 2 is hands down the absolute most fun I've had with video games in years. -

Oh man if this game can get these people singing like that this is going to be a huge game. I keep getting more and more hyped for it.
