It's because it's both a zoom lens and able to do f/2.8. A 2.8 ratio is a lot easier to maintain when the diaphragm itself is bigger.

Here's the old 'Bigma', the Sigma 50-500.

Dumb photographer took out the EXIF data though, so I don't know what kind of camera, which makes a difference. Also of course the 200-500 doesn't go down to 50, but you get the idea of what 500mm does.
Didn't find any other good comparisons like that in a quick search, but hopefully you get the idea. -
on 35mm SLR systems, a 50mm focal length is considered "normal", so that'd be 1x. 500mm would be 10x, and 1000mm would be 20x.
