Evening Reading

So uh... we thought about this global warming thing here in the US and decided it's probably not a big deal and not worth spending a little money on. We have a few more important issues around these parts.

Lastly, the object of nerd envy begins June 29. Ok well not quite, no 3G network? Meh.

World in Conflict: Still awesome. I really wish the NDA allowed screenshots/video.

I know some people are having trouble figuring out the game still, feel free to ask questions.

It really depends on how much teamwork is going on. If you get two very competant sides it can really turn in to a game of chess.

          Chess with nuclear weapons.

I had an amazing match the other night where we had 7 nukes total go off, the last 3 of which all came in all at the same time (1 my team for a total of 5, 2 theirs). It was still a damn close match, too.

It's awesome when a nuke goes off, it makes my 24" Dell monitor glow like the sun and my roommate thought it was my computer that fried or something.

So many well done effects. If you guys like the fuel air bomb in Generals, this one's would make you wet.

        From the beta forums:

"Open the registry editor (Start->Run->regedit) and move to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\ key. On the right side are all drive letters listed. It seems that one was duplicated by an emulation tool. If you delete the duplicate entry, then it should work again.

If the problem persists, please delete all REG_BINARY entries of this key (all blue ones on the right side). Afterwards reboot the machine and then the game should work again."

Deleting all of them worked for me, and I didn't have to reboot.

Game feels way too much like really shallow musical chairs. The "classes" are all just hard counters of each other, and they play way too differently. People who play infantry have a ton of shit to manage--like micromanagement hell from Starcraft. People who play helicopters might as well be playing Diablo. Just move your little block of helicopters around and die.

The lack of environmental interactivity is another huge disappointment. Capturing territory does little more than give you "points." There's little tactical incentive to capture one territory over another.

Another complaint: for all the talk of the game trying to eliminate the see-saw effect of RTS games (where one player advances early and the others are left in the dust), the reward system does just that. The people who are being effective and winning are constantly rewarded with more points that allow them to buy weapons to continue winning.

      Ugh, what can I say, I don't think it's a very good game :(

The in game matching system is very intuitive. Easy to jump in with other Shackers.

I think it just needs a bit more polish and it will be fine. For example the choppers don't really fly that smoothly in my opinion. Maybe that's because of my high ping but yeah.

Man, the US Heavy Arty is just crap. You can't hit anything with them. You can hit much more with the Medium Arty, and they fire faster. The Russian Heavy Arty is still my favorite though

But it looks so cool and leaves a nice trail so they can find you.

I just move my MLRS between a few spots after it finishes. Usually moves our of the way fast enough before the first counter battery fire comes in.

It would be nice if there was an easier way to detect incoming soviet ARTY. There is Counter-Battery Radar the Army uses, stuff like that should be in the game.
