Water In BioShock

2K's Cult of Rapture website has been updated, offering a Q&A on the water effects in the game. There's also a related movie, which you can find on FileShack.

I dont think the water in this game is anything other than a decent shader effect. Put in actual volumetric physical water then I might get excited.

I'm with you on that, they keep oohing and ahhing over the water, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually DO anything. It just sits there and looks pretty. When you can shoot a hole in the windows of a room and watch it fill with water from the outside, rendering that room blocked unless you have some sort of water breathing ability, then I'll care.

Then you can care because that's exactly what it does, as is clearly written in this interview. :)
ocean windows will crack and start spurting jets of water, entire tunnel sections will collapse causing their emergency containment doors to bow out and leak under the pressure of ocean, and even indoor structures like pools and tanks that were built to contain water will break.
But I see what you mean, and in this precise game it probably doesn't mean any 'revolutionnary' tech..
But what you talk about implies a huge amount of processing power, and right now only PhysX card can do this. (but no game will actually do it since it be a PhysX exclusive..)

Pretty amazing... that demo is made with the Unreal 3 engine. Can't wait to see Unreal Tournament 3...

While I see where they are going with it, you dropped the most important part of that quote. At certain times, ocean windows will crack and start spurting jets of water At certain times means it's all prescripted stuff where they decided that it should happen. There are numerous types and amounts of flooding in the game, but there's no place where an entire level has been completely flooded. To me it seems the water is just pretty to look at it doesn't really seem to offer anything that other games haven't done before in the fluids department. And don't get me wrong I'm not trying to be down on this game, if it's half as good as System Shock 2 I'll be happy to buy it. But I want a game where the water acts like water not just looks like it.

You know... AvP1 had volumetric water, deformable, with object buoyancy.

most likely scripted so nothing new

I saw the demo at E3 and it is easily the most realistic water ever in a game. It's truly incredible to see it first-hand. This video does not do it justice.
