Left 4 Dead Interview

There's a Left 4 Dead interview on Eurogamer, asking Valve's Erik Johnson and Doug Lombardi about Turtle Rock's co-op action game. Says Johnson "We feel pretty good about saying it's going to be the thing that finally beats Counter-Strike."

LMAO! Could he have possibly made a more ridiculous statement?

Well, it just might. Left 4 Dead will allow you to play *as* brain-dead zombies. Counter-Strike just lets you play *against* them.

I think the guys that made CS can shit talk about CS.

If the gameplay is tight, easy to pick up, and reasonably priced, it could be huge.

He clarifies that later in the article:

Eric Johnson: Maybe a different setting, and it's co-op and not multiplayer, but in terms of people's attachment to it, I feel like it's definitely offering the better version of that experience. I'm not saying that people are going to throw Counter-Strike away and start playing Left 4 Dead exclusively.

Regardless, that's a bunch of marketing bullshit. Massive online communities do not build up around co-op games, it just doesn't happen. Let alone a 4 player game. CS is so popular because of it's speed, the shortness of it's rounds, and the fact that anybody can hop on or off at any time and the game is not really affected.

Left 4 Dead involves hour long campaigns requiring organized, small player groups. It's going to be a sleeper hit at best. Saying it will compete with Counterstrike is just fucking stupid.

While I find CS in any version to be pretty crappy, as far as a FPS goes, I would agree with your reasons for why it's been successful, and especially in light of the main CS demographics (13-17 year old male gamers). Fast rounds, simplistic weapons modeling, and the overall game-speed make it very accessible and enjoyable for those who like that kind of thing.

I think that this Left 4 Dead game could be really, really fun, if they don't rush it out and if they make a concerted effort to learn a LOT from their beta tests. But I suppose that goes without saying for virtually ANY game.
