Welcome to Open-Source Game Journalism

11
Apparantly video game journalism just wasn't quite haphazardly presented enough. Today Wikia, Inc. announced the official launch of numerous "open source magazines," among them a video game-oriented site called gaming.wikia. Accompanying gaming.wikia are fellow enthusiast open source mags tunes.wikia, cars.wikia, and health.wikia. Wikia, Inc. is the for-profit company co-established by Jimmy Wales, co- founder of the non-profit online open-source encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Gaming.wikia and its siblings differ in content and format from Wikipedia, which itself already contains a massive amount of information about games. Rather than being a gaming encyclopedia, gaming.wikia is intended to be akin to a major consumer-targeted gaming site, driven entirely by its community rather than by a constant editorial staff. Users can post news or opinion, rate games or articles, and comment on content. Current front page stories include "World of Warcraft is Addictively Frustrating!" by Letsgojets, "Gangs of London Rocks!" by roblefko, and "Gaming Tattoo Gone Wrong," also by Letsogojets.

"The 'open-source magazines' we're unveiling today are focused largely around topics where passionate people have already started collaborating online," said Wikia VP of business development Dan Lewis in today's announcement. "The launch of Tunes, Cars, Gaming and Health is a continuation of our mission to open-source the creation and development of content around every topic imaginable--so we are obviously not stopping here."
