Now this is Episodic. Frequent releases at cheapo prices.

Exactly, valve needs to understand this concept.

I think Valve has given up on that idea. :/

I'm happy with Valve doing what they're doing, though obviously it would be nice if they were a bit quicker. I think this works fine for narrative stuff like adventure games but I can't see Valve releasing good Half-Life products on anything close to this kind of schedule.

What Valve is doing is fine. They just shouldn't pretend it is episodic.

No kidding. If HL2 is the measure, then the Splinter Cell and GRAW franchises are as well...

I think the real problem is FPS developers still have this shit work ethic from the 1990's that "when it's done" is a good idea. I mean that was cute when it meant "hey now, stop bitching we need 6 extra months to make sure there's no bugs" but now it means take YEARS more for no gain to anyone really.

Yeah they just need to better define the scope of their projects. It's hard to imagine DNF happening in any other industry. To many gamers in management methinks? :D

Well, there are movies that have been in development hell for decades. There are certainly books that have taken decades to write, and pieces of music that have taken decades to compose or record, and paintings or sculptures that have taken decades to complete.

The film adaptation of Watchmen is a good example of this. It's been burning through scripts and prospective directors since 1986, with every attempt so far ending in cancellation.

There've been around seven Superman movies that got axed before completion too.

Valve's just taking a collective-auteur approach to their work, which is just fine with me. Their batting average is very good, after all. And while the delays have allowed others to jump past them in some areas, they're still the only company to really nail facial animation. And it's not like you're stuck in a waiting room or anything while anticipating its release.

Valve does epic release schedules, not episodic.

Except that each episode is only about 1.5-2 hrs of gameplay, which one can argue is less value for Valve's episodes.

They're doing a great job with the series, but I'd rather have closer to 3 or 4 hr of play per ep than just what we're getting now.

i dont see the point to episodic, ill always just wait to buy them all together for a smaller price. why would i want to play a 2-3 hour game and wait 3-4 months to find out more? unless its sin which seems to be taking a LOOOONG time. now if the games were 6-7 hours, we might be talkin something differnt but no ones proven they can make episodes that last this long. by the time the "series" is done it should be about a 15-20 hours altogether

That's not really the reason. The studio was acquired.

Judging from what they're working on now, Ritual was probably completely out of money and didn't have any choice but to get acquired.
