Convert or Die

Left Behind: Eternal Forces is making headlines for the holidays. It's a game based on a series of Christian novels that are popular with religious teens in the US. Basically you take the Book of Revelations in a setting after the Rapture with a bit of zazz. The bit of zazz being you get to gun down people who dont share your religious beliefs. Apparently some groups frown upon that.

Left Behind Games' president, Jeffrey Frichner, says the game actually is pacifist because players lose "spirit points" every time they gun down nonbelievers rather than convert them. They can earn spirit points again by having their character pray. "You are fighting a defensive battle in the game," Frichner, whose previous company produced Bible software, said of combatting the Antichrist. "You are a sort of a freedom fighter." [snip]

It's a little different than the usual offensive game for sure. The Campaign to Defend the Constitution and the Christian Alliance for Progress, two online political groups, plan to demand Wal-Mart drop the game this week. Oh yeah, and one of the biz partners Troy Lyndon actually worked on the early (1990) Madden football.

Steve Gibson is the cofounder of Shacknews.com. Originally known as sCary's Quakeholio back in 1996, Steve is now President of Gearbox Publishing after selling Shacknews to GameFly in 2009.

Actually, the most interesting part of the article comes right at the end:

[Frichner's] business partner, Troy Lyndon, created Madden Football, one of the top-selling sports video games.

*Johnny Carson voice* I did not know that.
