IIRC - the most popular MMO on the market doesn't have an evil race and didn't have any PvP at launch. LoTRO pulls much of it's style/feel straight from WoW, and does a great job with PvE content. It has much nicer graphics and infinitely better lore.
Will it compete head-on with WoW right off? Of course not. Will it pull enough people to be a viable competitor? Let's hope so.-
Did you even play WoW? Undead? PvP servers at launch?
I'll agree with you that LOTR has better lore to pull from, but the graphics are on par with about 2 years ago.
But then again, it doesn't matter. It will have a huge following of fanboys based on name recognition alone, similar to SWG. And we all know how that went.-

From the screens I've seen, LotRO has the best graphics, period. I still think people regularly confuse art style with graphics. WoW "graphics " are good. They're not "OMG ROXORZ!!!!" Their art style is awesome. That said, I wouldn't want LotRO to look just like WoW. The LotRO engine looks fantastic.
If you want a cartoony fantasy look, to to WoW. It's not bagging on the game. It's just a different style.
