Star Wars Galaxies Chapter 4 Launched
LucasArts sent out this press release, announcing that the Chapter 4: Armed and Ready for Action update for Star Wars Galaxies is now available. It features a Profession Expertise System for Commandos, Spies and Medics, a Commando Kill Meter Power Boost and a new in-game reward.

I don't think the rushing was the only part. I know some people liked the skill based mechanics of the original game, but that was never going to crack into the masses and be a mainstream success. It is too obtuse and doesn't deliver a true "star wars" experience.
To me, the is the most overwhemling factor. The "raph koster" skill tree / everything is player created sandbox works well in fantasy setting that have lots of hardcore game players (such as D&D players), but Star Wars is a MUCH different beast. People want to blast people with lasers, have lightsabers and awesome battles, fly spacecraft and have dog fights, and feel like there was a true galatic rebellion happening.
SWG didn't do anything of those things. Grinding for skills was tedious and repetitive, combat was simplistic and boring, there was no space combat / game, and there was no feel of the world being a place of conflict (especially with only three planets with huge static outdoors).
It was just not the right game (or a good game) for the franchise.
All SoE really had to do was make EQ2 with the Star Wars license, and it would have been much more successful (althought I think they desperately need to hire some new character modelers there).-
Nah you're wrong in my opinion the sandbox stuff was amazing and the best thing about SWG. I think it worked very well with the Sci Fi Star Wars verse, the problems came from not fully devolping that vision. One of the things that was so annoying was the more you explored the more broken stuff you found.

How did it work well with the Star Wars universe? When in the movies did people break from adventure to make items to sell to other people? When in the movies did people engage in "randomly generated missions" that served no purpose in the galatic civil war? When did characters in the movies stop their activities to watch a dancer for 5 minutes so that they could continue their activities?
I'm not saying the mechanic aren't valid (although I don't like skill grinding, I know some people did), I'm just saying they aren't fitting to the action adenture and epic feel of the Star Wars universe. They are the opposite- they are slow/mundane, repetitive, and focus on very small things (not epic).-
I think that was the intention, to have epic events happening around the players rather the players making epic things happen. I think that's a valid way to do it, I agree they didn't quite pull it off correctly. But the idea that the only way to do a Star Wars game was to allow everyone to be Jedi and stuff I don't agree with.
