Hellgate: London Publishing Deal Q&A

3

There's a new Q&A with Bill Roper on GameSpot today, asking the Flagship Studios co-founder about the recently announced publishing deal with Electronic Arts.

What worries me, is that when I listened to the Flagship guy (tech lead, don't remember his name) speaking at the nVidia launch party in San Jose yesterday, he referred to Hellgate as an MMORPG and could not rule out the possibility of monthly fees.

He said a lot of good things about their desire for PvP support, online ladders, etc., and said they wanted to be able to provide excellent support post-launch... and when then asked about monthly fees, basically stated that they were considering their options (given the goal of post-launch support) and that he couldn't say more. He also made a side mention to Blizzard's support for Diablo/D2 being low after launch, which got a raised eyebrow from me... what kind of support are they considering if D2:LoD and the latter patches is considered poor?

So, heads up if monthly fees get announced later. I hope I'm wrong, or misinterpreted what he said, or so on...

      That's certainly unexpected.

Though if they offer increased content a monthly fee wouldn't necessarily be all that bad but they need to keep it low, like $5.

They've never marketed this as a MMO previously, so if they try to set up their business model as an MMO, I think a lot of potential gamers won't buy the game. They need to be careful with what they say -- people are going to get confused.

A few months ago they mentioned that they might implement monthly fees for the more MMO-like content they have planned (large party raid content sort of stuff), but that they still expected to have free singleplayer and multiplayer available.

They also said that their plans for multiplayer were very much in flux. It sounded like they really had no idea what they were going to do, but they wanted to keep providing content for the game, and were deciding on a way to fund it.

I seem to recall, they mentioned guild wars style expansions as a possibility as well.
