John Carmack Keynote Highlights

60

id Software's John Carmack gave his annual keynote address at QuakeCon yesterday and PlanetQuake4.net and GameSpy have writeups. Among other things, Carmack mentioned that id's next game will be a 3D action game though they are "are branching out into different directions" with the project. The game will use an advanced version of the MegaTexture technology powering Quake Wars so we should see plenty of outdoor areas. As for his cellphone projects, Carmack had this to say

"The cell phone platform stuff has been really pretty fun," said Carmack on his side projects developing cell phone games. "I look at that and think, 'This would have been such a cool environment to learn programming and game development on.'" "I tell people now, if you want a professional programmer, programming something on the cell phone might be a really good way to start, because you can just do it in Java, and you don't have to learn DX9 to get stuff on the screen. I look back at how I learned programming on an Apple II; there was a lot of benefit to being able to write a couple-of-pages program to see stuff happen on the screen that you really don't get with PC development nowadays."

They've trademarked the names Rage and Rage: Anarchy. It's unknown exactly what those names will be attached to (could be a mobile game), but many people assume it's the title of their new PC/Console IP.

Both are pretty bad names, and I hope neither is the name for their new IP.

But if it's awesome, I can get used to it.

Doom and Quake are pretty bad initial names for an IP too, but they work. Names are funny like that. They often are not good until you've heard them 5 million times.

I always thought Doom was a great name. I had to get used to Quake, because it sort of has nothing to do with the game in question.

Doom and Quake are both short and solid distinctive sounding names. "Rage: Anarchy" is ridiculous, there are a thousand games that have that ridiculous generic subtitle thing going on. "Rage" could be good on its own, but "Rage: Anarchy" just sounds like a joke.

Unlikely to be a mobile game, because the trademark would say so in this case - Orcs & Elves was known to be a mobile game before announced exactly because it specified it was a mobile game on the trademark.

They need something lke War Rage or Battle Rage or something that actually does have to do with war but isn't used or is too generic.

Yes, they have a live trademark for that name.

According to a Xbox site Rage: Anarchy is scheduled for Q4 2006 and XBox only:

I think it's safe to say that that's complete bullshit.
