Independent Games Festival 2007 Announced

6
The CMP Group has officially announced the rules, deadlines, and prizes for the 2007 Independent Games Festival, to be held during next year's Game Developers Conference in March. This time around, a "Best Student Game" category has been added, and the IGF Mod Competition has been overhauled following its inception in the 2006 awards. Over $50,000 will be awarded for independently developed games across the Main Competition, Mod Competition, and Student Showcase categories. The awards are as follows:
IGF Competition:
- Seumas McNally Grand Prize ($20,000); Excellence In Visual Art ($2,500); Excellence In Audio ($2,500); Innovation Award ($2,500); Technical Excellence ($2,500); Best Web Browser Game ($2,500); Audience Award ($2,500);
IGF Mod Competition:
- Best Singleplayer FPS Mod ($500); Best Multiplayer FPS Mod ($500); Best RPG Mod ($500); Best 'Other' Mod ($500); Best Mod ($5,000)
IGF Student Showcase:
- IGF Student Showcase Winner ($500); Best Student Game ($2,500)

Games featured in past IGF competitions have included high profile titles such as Introversion's Darwinia, The Behemoth's Alien Hominid, S2 Games' Savage, Chronic Logic's Gish, and others. In 1999, Vicarious Visions' Terminus won multiple IGF awards; currently, the company is a major game developer with many projects released for Activision.

This year, the modding requirements have been somewhat relaxed. Now, rather than being limited to particular games, mods can come from any game, whether currently supported or otherwise, as long as the mod has been updated within the last 12 months. There are no doubt some Shackers involved with mods of various games, so get those submissions in.

The deadline for main competition games is September 8, 2006; the deadline for mods is October 13, 2006; and the deadline for student games is November 10, 2006. Full rules and details are available on the IGF website.

      Yeah, I figure it's probably tough to get a whole judging panel to play that many games in a reasonable amount of time, since playing a game thoroughly enough to form a solid opinion on it is more time consuming than, say, watching a film or listening to a piece of music or even reading a book. However, in the case of the mod competition, finalists are announced in January, so that gives some perspective there.

      Thanks for the heads up, though. I can get the announcement out to the team right away. I formally take back all the bad things I'd said about you.
