NCsoft Austin Loses 23% of Staff

Following rumors yesterday, MMO publisher NCsoft has issued a brief statement confirming that a corporate restructuring has resulted in reducing its workforce at its Austin studio. The company reports that about 23% of NCsoft Austin's workforce, 70 jobs in total, has been downsized. The company cites a slowing launch schedule as reason for the move.
Over the past two and a half years NCsoft has launched six major titles into the North American market and has grown with each title launch. As the company continues to grow its live products and prepares its next set of major online game releases for later in 2006 and 2007, the company sees a slowdown in its launch pattern and the need to streamline its business.

According to company representatives, no development on any NCsoft titles has been negatively impacted. NCsoft Austin is still hiring developers for Ultima creator Richard Garriott's upcoming MMO Tabula Rasa.

If they were truly launch-oriented jobs, I'd think customer service, backend server and network engineering, and marketing - job roles that are useful across product lines, and aren't needed if there isn't a launch coming up soon.
