You know after seeing oblivion, these just aren't exciting me.

Oblivian also is a single player game so yeah those are always going to have better graphics.

eq2 with everything on max defies that theory very well. To bad its got bad art.

Art is graphics so yes sorry my theory wasn't deflated. Plus as others mentioned Oblivion just came out sure I hope to God it looks better than WoW which came out a few years ago.

Graphics and art are two very different things but are merged together. Graphics can make art. Art is graphical direction. so to put it better EQ2 has high end shader materials and particle systems and a shadow and lighting model. But a very horrible intergration of that graphical technology with their art team.

And in the case of EQ2 graphics might be better technically speaking but fails miserably in the design department, character players just look ugly. Even DAOC looks way better or GW.

Other MMOs have done graphic upgrades with expansions.

isn't this expansion was supposed to increase the polycounts (double?) of all the mobs/players/npcs/ and possibly items?

not exactly a massive upgrade to the visuals, but it should look better when everything isn't as 'blocky'

They also generally do that years later. UO for example took almost 4 years before any sort of major upgrade took place.

No, not really, graphics refers more to how it renders the art assets than the art assets themselves, a good texture is a good texture, whether it's rendered with per vertex or per pixel lighting does nothing to change the art quality, but DOES change the graphical quality.

case in point, Quake vs GLQuake, same art, different graphics

EQ2 on max defies nothing since the game runs like ass. If anything that game makes a perfect point as to why online games need not to rape your graphic card.

On the other end, i can play WoW at 1600x1200 without a single frame drop and the game still looks wonderful...

Nah I play EQ2 on high settings (not max) and I haven't got a top end machine x850 xt, even for PVP it runs fine. Besides at least EQ2 and most other MMOs gives you the option of bringing your computer to a crawl if you want too. I don't see why WoW didn't have better scalability.

Well, to be fair i was talking about release, by now i guess the game isn't much of an hardware hog anymore.

As for your question, i have no idea. If i can play WoW at 1600x1200 with a readon 9800 i don't see why they can't improve the graphics a little bit all the new hardware out right now. Surely the engine is fast enough as it is...

yeah it really does look like ass in comparison

I don't think its a fair comparison for two reasons.

      1) Oblivian is brand new. Wow has been out since dec of 04. Expansion is using the same engine.
      2) They go in completely different artistic directions. Blizzard is more cartoony, oblivian tries to be realistic.

IA, why can't there be a good graphics mmorpg. EQ2 has shaders but idiotic art direction, WoW looks like something from 1998 with a few higher res textures.

Looking at these and other burning crusade screenshots I don't see whats so good about WoWs art direction, I admit I never really liked the cartoon feel but those Blood Elves are awful.

WoW graphics were always terrible, ever since the first screenshot came out. Final Fantasy had better graphics, a lot better graphics.

All the purple and pink armor sets have made me sick for a long long long time.

I think this is the first time I've read someone saying they were "terrible".

I absolutely love them. How many games have such simple graphics and look so good?

He's talking about the graphics not the art. WoW graphics look like ass, the square/jagged low poly count could use alot of work. The cartoony-art is what most people in the game like. Nothing wrong with that either, just wanted to clear that up.

I love the style of WoW, don't dig on the realistic look of Oblivion or EQ2. Just doesn't cut it, I see to many flaws.
